Personal protective Equipment (PPE)

• PPE is defined as all equipment which is intended to be worn or held to

protect against risk to health and safety.

• Eye Protection: Serves as a guard against the hazards of impact, splashes

from chemical or molten metal, liquid droplets (chemical mist or sprays),
dust, gasses and welding arcs.

• Foot Protection: Shoes made with a protective reinforcement at the front to

protect your ankles, toes and feet from injury. The reinforcement helps to
protect the toes from falling objects or any kind of compression.

• Hand Protection: Gloves provide protection against a range of hazards

including cuts and abrasions, extremes of temperature (cold or hot).

• Protective clothing: Designed to protect the body from injury or infection.

The hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical,
heat.

EXPERIMENT 4: Sheet metal forming- part 2 bending and riveting

Introduction:

Different sets of manufacturing processes in which the material is deformed plastically to

take the shape of the die geometry. Sheet metal forming is a process where segments of
sheet metal are adjusted to its geometry rather than taking off any materials. Furthermore,
sheet metal forming includes the Cutting, Shearing, Bending and etc of sheet metal
operations done in sheet metal. This lab focuses on the bending process and riveting
process. The bending operation is a metal forming process in which a force is applied to a
piece of sheet metal, causing it to bend at an angle and form the required shape. The
bending process causes deformation along one axis and the bent parts can be extremely
small, like a bracket, or up to 20 feet in length, like a large enclosure or chassis. On the
other hand, Riveting is a process that used to join parts together by way of a metal part
called a rivet. The rivet acts to combine the parts through adjacent surfaces. Rivets have
numerous uses, such as in the construction and sheet metal industries.

Objective:
§ To learn sheet metal forming by bending machine and finish the job
according to the drawing.

Apparatus:
The apparatus consists of the following:

§ Mallet
§ Bench vice
§ Punch Bending machine
§ Sheet metal
§ Rivets
§ Punch or Rivet gun

Procedure:

1. The edges which needs to be bended are placed on the bending machine and the
required angle bend is performed on the cut edges.
2. Apply the required force using mallet placing on vice to achieve the required shape.
3. The points which needs to be riveted are pointed using the punch and will be riveted
during the next exercise.

Experiment setup:

First, we bended the borders using the bending machine and we got the required angle bend
on each border. Second, we placed the sheet metal (after shearing and bending) on the
bench vise and we used the mallet to get the desired shape. Finally, used the drill to make
holes on each border and we used the punch to put the rivets on each hole.

Analysis and Discussion:

Metal fabrication is the process of converting metals into different shapes for assembly
usage. Manufacturing industries using various ways to fabricate metals, but the four main
processes are used to fabricate a metallic product is casting, cutting, joining, and metal
forming. In this experiment (part 2), we used the sheared sheet metal to get a new shape
which is a box. The second process to get a box is bending operation which is an operation
that produces a V-shape, U-shape, or channel shape along a straight axis in ductile
materials. Also, this lab contains another important process to achieve the goal of the lab
which is the riveting process. By riveting, we got the ability to make joint by using a rivet
that acts to join the parts through surfaces regardless of the location. However, wearing
gloves is necessary as the edges are sharp. Our observation in this experiment is that the
edges must bended on 90o and we can use the mallet to achieve the required shape.
Overall, Sheet metal forming can be used in different industrial areas such as automotive,
aircraft, and food industries.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, we successfully reached our goal of the experiment which is forming the
sheet metal by bending and riveting. This experiment taught us how to use the bending
machine to bend any metal sheet and how to use rivets to join the parts through surfaces.
At the end of this experiment, we acknowledged how to use the sheet metal to form any
shape such as box and can. The lab was very simple, and the apparatuses were easy to deal
with, where the instructions were clear enough and helpful to reach the goal.

Guide Questions:

1. Brief sheet metal operations carried out in this exercise.

In our experiment, we used the bending machine to bend the metal sheet, so we applied
force to bend the sheet to the desired shape. After that we used the mallet to get the right
shape. Finally, we used the drill to make holes on each border and we used the punch to put
the rivets on each hole. Using the shearing machine which is multipurpose device that can
cut the sheet metal and angular shear that is make it unique from other manufacturing
machine.

2. What is stamping operation?

The stamping procedure is the method of placing into a stamping press some flat sheet of
metal in the coil where the net shape of the tool and the surface of the die would be. It also
involves certain sheet metal, such as punching, using the machine press or the stamping
press, bending, coining, flanging and blanking processes.
