1 INTRODUCTION

~omputers are the machines that have revolutionised the world around us. The way we u sedc~
hve around 25-30 years ago is very different from how we live today . A modem age stud(~t
cannot even imagine life, without email, Internet, print outs, playing music on computers ,~
smartphones, photos jus t a click away in the form of smartphones and so on. In short, in evE,fl_ry
aspect of life aro und us, we see computers play a role directly or indirectly. ( (_
Computers de liver so much, diligently and efficiently, a ll thanks to the wonderful combinaf~
of the ir hardware and software. ~;
¢) Hardware. The physica l electronic components of a compute r are called hardwa re, e~'i>,
keyboaid, CPU, monitor, printer e tc.

2 COMPUTER COMPONENTS AND BASIC COMPUTER ORGANIZATION


A computer sys tem comprises of five basic components (see Fig. 1.1) :
(r) Input Unit. It is responsible for taking input for the computer. The input devi ces
attached to the compute r sys tem make the input unit.
(ii) Output Unil It is responsible for taking input for the computer. The ou tput device:,
