May/June: 2005 - Questions 3 and 4.

#3 (a) (i) Label the parts of the flower:

I. Stigma.
II. Anther.
III. Filament.
IV. Style.
V. Ovary.

(ii) The term ‘essential’ is used to describe the labeled structures because all must be
present for a single flower to have a complete structure to carry out its functions such
as pollination and fertilization for the continuation of the species.

(b) (i) Flower 1: insect.

Flower 2: wind.

(ii) Characteristics in Flower 1:

1. Has large brightly colored petals, scented and secrete nectar to attract pollinating
agents.

2. Pollen grains are fewer in number as they are transported manually by insects.

Characteristics in Flower 2:

1. Has a feathery stigma to catch pollen from the wind.

2. A large amount of pollen is made due to most being blown away and lost.
(c) Fruit of Flower 1:

Fruit of Flower 2:

#4(a) Stage II: This is the stage of rapid growth. The seedlings grow green leaves and begin
to photosynthesize to produce their own food which is used for cell growth. Cells are dividing
and growing rapidly, thus gaining mass quickly, and few are dying in a population, the birth
rate is much higher than the death rate.
Stage IV: This stage may often be defined as stationary, meaning that the plant does not
gain nor lose mass, growth has stopped. Cells are dividing and growing at the same rate as
mature cells are dying, in a population, the birth rate and death rate are equal.

(b) Mineral Salt 1: Nitrogen.

Role: To make proteins used for plant growth.

Mineral Salt 2: Magnesium.

Role: To make chlorophyll; magnesium forms part of the chlorophyll molecule.

(c) (i) Two advantages of plants storing food in its seeds are:

1. The stored food is used by the embryo which develops from seeds, to grow until it
forms leaves and can photosynthesize to produce its own food.

2. During colder seasons, the plant utilizes this stored food to survive as sunlight is
limited and hence, less photosynthesis occurs.

(ii) Two situations in which stored food is used in the life cycle of a plant are:

1. During winter, when there is little sunlight available thus results in them
photosynthesizing less, the stored food is used.

2. In hot countries, there is a point in time where plants become leafless and thus, they
are unable to photosynthesize to produce food so the stored food comes in handy at
this specific time.
