“Students should not be allowed to use cellular phones in school.”

Understandably, cell phones are innovative technology in the modern world as we know
today, it is outstanding that almost everyone has one. However, the reason students fancy
this device in the learning institution has triggered a debate. While some may believe the use
of cell phones can also positively impact the teaching and learning process it may pose a
distraction and risk the students into irresponsible behaviours. The utilization of cell phones
in school will be a distraction, fuel disrespectful behaviour and generate cyberbullying.

Cell phones in school will be a distraction, and it is proven that 80% of students agreed that
using a mobile phone in class decreases their ability to pay attention. The mere presence of
a cell phone can be distracting for both the cell phone user and students sitting around the
user. As well as, the obvious distraction, if someone gets a text or phone call, even if it's
silent. Students find ways to text, surf the internet, and post on social media all while the
teacher is instructing. They hide their devices in their lap, a sweatshirt pocket, or even in an
open pocket of their backpack. The end result is that they are only half-present in the
classroom most of the time.

The application of cell phones in school fuels disrespectful behaviour among students and
their peers. Texting during class is, simply put, is disrespectful to your teachers. They are
here to help you learn, and by texting during their lessons, you are showing them that you
value messaging with friends far more than class participation. You are not only being
disrespectful but also wasting time. It is also a distraction to those around you who are trying
to learn. You are detracting from the learning environment, for which you pay a lot of money
to create. So, is it really worth it?

Using cell phones in school generates cyberbullying especially with the amount of social
media and the number of students using these apps. Authorizing the use of cellphones in the
learning environment allows a gateway for bullies to broaden their horizon. Instead of the
normal rough and tumble bullying, this is a whole new level. Social media is ever-evolving
and thus, empowers the bullies to use their resources. A few taps on the screen and an
uploaded picture, video or insulting caption are instantly shared in seconds. Consequently, a
student’s reputation is tarnished. They may skip school to avoid facing their peers who
cyberbullying them or because they are embarrassed and humiliated by the messages that
were shared online. Their grades may also suffer because they find it difficult to concentrate
or study.
In conclusion, while the use of cell phones can also positively impact the teaching and
learning process, it poses a distraction and encourages irresponsible behaviour. The
utilization of cell phones in school will be a distraction, fuel disrespectful behaviour, and
generate cyberbullying. It is important that individuals consider the disadvantages of
permitting the use of cell phones in schools, its effect on the students, and their overall
performance.
