TEACHER Tips, Tricks & Prep
Lab:
Students will view this link to gather ideas about what kind of an experiment they want to do.
Once they have decided on an experiment, they will use the Science Experiment Report to guide them
through the Scientific Method.
A literacy read is provided here to show the steps of the Scientific Method.
HELPFUL HINTS:
When students are Analyzing Data and Drawing Conclusions, they only need choose ONE graph – which
ever graph fits their experiment. Bar, line and circle graphs have been provided here.
Provide to each student/ table or team a color copy of the “Helpful Resource for Writing a Science
Report”. This will guide students on which graph to use and how to set up the graph.
Vocabulary to know:
• Observations: The action or process of using your senses or measurements to collect
information that will help answer questions
• Inference: A conclusion based on observations.
• Example: It’s cloudy and dark outside. I infer that it will rain.
• Hypothesis: An educated guess of what I think will occur in the experiment based on
knowledge.
• Analyze Data: Organizing the data collected to carefully examine the results.
• Independent Variable: What you are changing and testing in your experiment.. You will
display this on the X axis of the graph.
• Dependent Variable: What you will measure in your experiment using metric units. This will
be displayed on the Y axis of the graph.
• Conclusion:
ü What I learned?
ü Did it support my hypothesis?
ü How can I make it better?
• Scientific Method: An organized process of steps to find answers to questions by
conducting a test

Scientific Background:
• Scientists naturally observe, question and make predictions about the natural world.
• The scientific method is a process that allows all people, not just scientists, to conduct tests that
will answer questions or solve problems that we are curious about.
• Scientists use this procedure to help them explain why things happen the way they do.
• It is an organized step-by-step procedure with several components. Sometimes we use all the
steps, and other times we use only a portion of the steps. It is also cyclical.
• The scientific method is different from the Engineering Design Process in that the S.M. is
conducting a controlled test to find answers to questions and the E.D.P. is creating a prototype of
something that is a solution to a problem. Both are very valuable.
• Scientists build on facts, look for evidence, and obtain new knowledge.
• You can use this method for the simplest to the most complex questions.
• It can guide people of all ages to find answers to questions all around us.
• The steps of the Scientific Method can vary in the order they follow. For example, a question may
come to find first before observations etc.
