ODULE 5: ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

THE NATURE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

We have said that an electric charge produces an electric
field. An oscillating charge will produce an oscillating
electric field, which in turn produces an oscillating magnetic
field. Electromagnetic waves, or electromagnetic radiations,
are produced by oscillating electric charges, with the electric
field and the magnetic field vibrating perpendicularly to
each other and to the direction of wave propagation. Hence,
electromagnetic waves are transverse waves.
Figure 1 shows the magnetic and electric components of
an electromagnetic wave.

 RADIO WAVES

Radio waves are the longest of all electromagnetic waves,

ranging from 10-1m co 104 m. The frequency of radio waves
ranges from 30 kHz to 3 000 MHz. This frequency range is
divided into specific bands for wireless communication.
Table 1 lists these radio bands.
