A. Readings/Discussions

A decimal number is a number composed of a whole part and fractional part which are

the digits with the same place values from the leftmost digits. The symbols > (less than),
< (greater than), and = ( equal to ) are used in comparing numbers.

Task 1:
John was asked to cut five pieces of wire each one as close as possible to 15.125
cm in length. The record shows the length of the pieces john cut. Is the first piece
longer or shorter than the last piece?
Record Sheet
Piece Number Length ( cm)
1 15.182
2 15.147
3 15.087
4 15.097
5 15.18

 To answer the problem above, compare the length of the first piece with that
of the last piece
First piece: 15.18 2 2>0 15.182 > 15.180
Last Piece : 15.18 0 15.180 < 15.182
Answer: the first piece is longer than the last piece
the last piece is shorter than the first piece

1
Compare the other pieces, one place value at a time.
Second piece 15. 147 Third piece 15. 0 8 5 Fourth piece 15. 0 97
Third piece 15 .085 Fourth piece 15. 0 9 7 Fifth piece 15. 1 8
1>0 8< 9 0< 1
So, 15.147>15.085 So, 15.085<15.097 So, 15.097<15.18

 List the numbers from greatest to least

Answer: 15.182 , 15.180 , 15.147 , 15.097 , 15.085
