“Globalization of Culture through Media” by Marwan M. Kraidy.

Introduction
The globalization of culture is often chiefly imputed to international mass media.
After all, contemporary media technologies such as satellite television and the
Internet have created a steady flow of transnational images that connect audiences
worldwide. The mass media are today seen as playing a key role in enhancing
globalization, and facilitating cultural exchange and multiple flows of information and
images between countries through international news broadcasts, television
programming, new technologies, film, and music. Global Media Cultures explores the
relationship between the media, culture and globalization. The course approaches
past and current challenges concerning international communication and explores
and problematizes the power of media representation.

Thesis Statement:
Part 1
Role of mass media in the globalization of culture is contested issue in international
communication theory and research. Early theories of media influence, commonly
referred to as "magic bullet" or "hypodermic needle" theories, believed that the mass
media had powerful effects over audiences. In the 1980s, key theoretical
formulations in international communication clung to a belief in powerful media
effects on cultures and communities. Today, little agreement exists among
researchers as to the level, scope, and implications of media influence. At the same
time, a body of literature has emerged questioning the scope and level of influence
of transnational media. While some scholars in that school questioned cultural
imperialism without offering conceptual alternatives, others have developed
theoretical alternatives to cultural imperialism based on an interdisciplinary literature
from the social sciences and humanities.
Part 2
The Cultural globalization involves the formation of shared norms and knowledge
with which people associate their individual and collective cultural identities. It brings
increasing interconnectedness among different populations and cultures. The Role of
Media in Globalization is a technology that are intended to reach a large audience by
mass communication. Today the media play a key role in enhancing globalization
and the media also play important role in facilitating culture exchange flows of
information between countries.

Part 4
In international communication theory and research, cultural imperialism theory
argued that audiences across the globe are heavily affected by media messages
emanating from the Western industrialized countries. Cultural Imperialism Theory
states that Western nations dominate the media around the world which in return has
a powerful effect on Third World Cultures by imposing n them Western views and
therefore destroying their native cultures. In contrast to cultural imperialism, which
encourages scholars to focus on cultural dominance and cultural producers, as well
as the power of the latter to impose their ideology on others, globalization of culture
encourages scholars to focus on cultural resistance and consumption, as well as the
power of the latter to impose their ideology on others. Globalization is the result of
technological advancements that have enabled a worldwide drive toward economic,
financial, and communication integration. However, it has been shown that the
globalization paradigm has weaknesses, which are referred to as cultural
imperialism.

Part 5
Globalization has resulted in greater acceptance of new ideas and influences by
media, especially transnational media. Hybridization in forms of media is a product of
the convergence. It is the process that old forms of media propagation into new
forms, which make it more accessible in local markets. The mass media are today
seen as playing a key role in enhancing globalization, and facilitating cultural
exchange and multiple flows of information and images between countries through
international news broadcasts, television programming, new technologies, film, and
music. Hybridization has become part of an ongoing trend in cultural production, with
both the globalization and localization of the culture industry. Hybridization, however,
is not merely the mixing, blending and synthesizing of different elements that
ultimately forms a culturally faceless whole. In the course of hybridization, cultures
often generate new forms and make new connections with one another.

Conclusion
It refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, particularly
through the movement of goods, services, and capital across borders. The term
sometimes also refers to the movement of people and knowledge across
international borders. Scholars in developing countries must come up with
reasonable and practical solutions to this problem and preserve and protect their
identity. The most effective way is to rationally utilize the new telecommunication
technologies and have a clear plan of action for peaceful coexistence with other
cultures, races and nations. Many countries in the South are concerned with
bolstering their national identity and. Strengthening their role in the globalization of
media and technology. It has to be emphasized that the local and national media
cannot accomplish them. objective of preserving national identities unless they can
manage to hold on to them. Traditional audiences and attract new viewers and
listeners as well. The rise of alternative media signals the empowerment of
communities of the South in expressing their opinions and needs by using modern
technologies to obtain their participation in the public sphere. The best instrument for
filling this cultural gap is the appropriate utilization of the influence of the media on
education in strategic strategic planning.

1. What are the current issue of the Philippine economy specifically in

Mindanao area? State at least one issue and explain it briefly.

- One of the major problems in Mindanao is the long-standing neglect from the
national government and lack of economic development. The root cause of cultural,
religious, and armed conflict still goes back to the problem of lack of jobs and
economic development and this leads to a vicious cycle of poverty.
Poverty is one issue in Mindanao because of high inflation during crisis periods and
high levels of population growth also high and persistent levels of inequality incomes
and assets which dampen the positive impacts of economic expansion and recurrent
shocks and exposure to risks such as economic crisis, conflicts, natural disasters,
and environmental poverty.

2. How does globalization in Mindanao affects the economy of the Philippine?

Explain in not more than 50 words.

- Concerns and issues are often raised about the impact of globalization on
employment, working conditions, income and social protection. Beyond the world of
work, the social dimension encompasses security, culture and identity, inclusion or
exclusion and the cohesiveness of families and communities. Globalization has a
positive effect on the country's economic growth and employment. In particular, trade
openness and foreign portfolio flows have contributed to higher per capita GDP
growth in the Philippines, following the implementation of FX liberalization reforms.
