At rest

F1 F2
If forces are equal in magnitude, the
body will continue to remain at rest.
R=0

At rest
F1=30N F2=50N

R=20N to the right

Body at rest may possibly move
R also called the net when/if two forces are not equal
external force.
in magnitude
In motion
F1 F2 The body will continue to move with
constant velocity or uniform
motion.
F1=F2
R=0
Once the body is acted upon by
In motion unequal force, the body will
speed up or move faster but if it
F1=30N F2=50N
is acted by another force (net
external force – analogous to
R=20N to the right resultant), the body will
decelerate.)
Fnet – sometimes known as
unbalance force – means, 2
forces are no longer equal.
1. Law of Inertia
“A body at rest will remain at rest and a body
in motion will continue to move with constant
speed or velocity along a straight line unless
acted upon by a net external force.”

Inertia – the property of the body to remain at rest

and to continue moving with constant velocity when
in motion.
Mass of the body – a measure of its inertia; the
greater the mass the greater the inertia or the
resistance to change in motion.

2. Law of Acceleration
“If a net force or unbalance force acts on
the body, the body will accelerate; the
magnitude of the acceleration is directly
proportional to the net force and
inversely proportional to the mass of the
body. The direction of the acceleration is
the same as the direction of the net
force.”
3. Law of Action and Reaction

“When an object exerts a force on

another object, the second object
exerts on the first a force of the same
magnitude but of opposite direction.”

“For every action there is an equal but

opposite reaction.”
