forces

forces
Defined as push or pull which occurs
when an object interacts with another
object.
Forces occur between two objects
Forces acting
on each other
are always in
opposite
direction
Forces can make
the objects move
Forces can make
the moving
objects stop.
Forces can make the moving objects move to a
different direction
Forces can change
the shape of an
object
Types of forces

Contact Non-contact
force force
Contact force – two objects are in contact
• Applied force – force given to an object by another object.
• Frictional Force (Friction) – force acting against or
opposite to an object making the object move slower
or bring it to a stop.
• Normal force – acts perpendicular to the surface of
the object
• Tensional force
(Tension) – force
applied to a string,
rope, chain, or
cable.
Non-contact forces – forces where objects do not touch
• Gravitational Force (Gravity) – force of attraction between objects.
• Magnetic Force (Magnets) – forces exerted on a field of attraction or
repulsion.
Net force
• Sum of all the forces acting on the object. If the net force is 0, forces
are balanced.
• If the net force is NOT 0, forces are unbalanced.
Balanced forces
• Forces acting on the object is equal, so the object will not move
Unbalanced forces
• Forces are NOT equal, so the object will move.
3 Laws of Motion
First Law
• An object at rest will
remain at rest, and an
object in motion will
remain in motion in the
same straight line unless
acted upon by an external
net force.
Inertia – a property of matter to remain at rest or in motion unless
acted upon by an external net force.
Second Law
• The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and is
inversely proportional to the object’s mass. The direction of the acceleration is in the
direction of the net force acting on the object.”

an equal and opposite
reaction.
