Bicycle tire has 6 cm× 4 cm area touching the ground .The mass of the bicycle is 22
kg and mass of the cyclist is 60 kg .Find the minimum pressure needed in the tire .

Total area,A = ( 6 cm × 4 cm )× 2= 48 cm 2= 48× (10−2 m) 2 = 48× 10 -4 m 2

Total mass, m= 22+ 60 = 82 kg , g = 10 m s -2

Mass (7 marks)

Mass is the quantity of matter in a body. Mass is also a measure of

inertia.

Weight

The attracting force of the earth acting on a body is defined as the weight of the body.

( 12) The gravitational force of the moon is less than that of the earth ,The moon’s
gravitational force acting on a body of mass 1 kg is 1.6 N . What will be the
weight of a 40 kg mass on the moon?

m 1 = 1 kg, w 1 = 1.6 N, g=?

w 1 = m 1g

g = w 1/m 1 g = 1.6/ 1 = 1.6 m s -2

m 2 =40 kg, w 2 =?
w2=m2g

= 40× 1.6

= 64 N

A student lifts a box weighing 50N through a vertical height 1.1m and
then walks horizontally for 2.0 m at constant speed while holding the
box.What is the work done by the student on the box?

w= 50 N, h=1.1 m, s=2 m, W=?

Work done in lifting a box, W= PE= mgh

W= wh (∵w=mg)
= 50×1.1
= 55 J

Work done for horizontal movement,W= Fs cos𝜽 (𝜽= 90֯ )

W=0 (∵cos 90֯ =0)

Total work done by the student, W= 55+ 0= 55 J

Find (a) potential energy of the ball before the fall (b) its kinetic energy as it hits
the plate, ( c ) its velocity on hitting the plate
m= 100 g =0.1 kg , h 0 = 1.8 m,
(a)The potential energy before the fall, PE 0 = mgh 0

(b) By the law of conversation of energy,

kinetic energy as it hits= potential energy at 1.8 m

( c ) KE= ½ mv 2
1.8= ½ (0.1) v 2
v 2 =3.6/ 0.1
