Topic:
Produce Quantities for buildings and Preparation of Bill of Quantities
Scenario:
AQUA Consultants Ltd is a well-known merchandising company in Sri Lanka. Management of the
company have decided to construct a Workers’ Rest Room in the same premises of the main factory
building accommodating 12 perches inclusive of provisions for landscaping.
Assume that you have been appointed as the Assistant Quantity Surveyor of this project and
carryout the tasks as stated below for construction of the proposed Workers’ Rest Room.
A) Take off quantities of the below work items of proposed Workers’ Rest Room block in accordance
with SMM7 as per attached drawings.
a) Substructure work
b) Superstructure work including water supply and drainage services
Taking off shall be strictly in accordance with SMM7. Where information is missing or the
specification is not adequate, make sensible assumptions and all assumptions made shall
be entered into a “query sheet”.
B) Produce the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for the Workers’ Rest Room block following the standard
process of squaring, abstracting and billing. Appropriate preliminary and preamble clauses should
be incorporated relevant to the given project. Prime cost and Provisional sums to be specified and
incorporated to the produced BOQ as necessary.

Rubble Masonry 1:5 ct. /sand mix. Refer drg for detail measurements
Damp Proof Course (DPC) 20 mm thick 1:3 cement /sand bedding finished with 2 coats
of bitumen; as per manufacturer’s specification (Lankem) and
blinded with sand.
Damp Proof Membrane Gauge 500 polythene damp proof membranes with 6"
laps laid under floors
Roofing Asbestos roofing fixed to class 1 hard wood frame work as per
manufacturer’s specification (Mascons roofing sheets) .
Eave 225mmm high 20mm thick valance and barge boards in class
1 timber finished with 2 coats of colorless water based wood
preservative and 2 coats of enamel paint as per
manufacturer’s specification
Eaves ceiling to be finished with 6 mm thick asbestos ceiling
sheets
Ceiling finishes Flat Ceiling – Asbestos ceiling sheets fixed with rust proofed
nails, with two coats of emulsion paint
Floor /Wall finishes 300mmX300mm non slip ceramic floor tiles laid as per
manufacturer’s specification (Lanka Tiles) laid on 25mm thick
1:3 cement /sand bedding and pointing with tile grout to
match.

External plaster 13mm thick cement/sand 1:5 mix finished
rough with wooden float
