1. (a) In the assembly between two rigid walls shown in Fig. I(a), the steel bar is rigidly (15)
attached to the brass bar with a gap of 0.5 mm between the left wall and the steel bar.
When the temperature is 20°C, the bars are stress free. Find the stresses in the bars and
the length of each bar when the temperature rises to 120°C in brass and 150°C in steel.
The diameters of steel and brass bars are 18 nun and 30 mm, respectively. For steel, E =
200 GPa and a = 12 xIO-6rC. For brass, E = 95 GPa and a = 20 xlO-6/oC .

5. A steel shaft is to be manufactured either as a solid circular bar or as a circular tube. The (30)
shaft is required to transmit a torque of 1500 N.m without exceeding an allowable shear
stress of 55 MPa nor an allowable rate of twist of 0.83°/m. The shear modulus of

elasticity of the steel is 83 GPa.


(a) Determine the required diameter of the solid shaft;
(b) Determine the required outer diameter of the hollow shaft if the thickness of the shaft is
specified as one-eighth ofthe outer diameter;
(c) Detennine the ratio of diameters and the ratio of weights of the hollow and solid shafts.

8. (a) For an industrial laboratory, a pilot unit is to employ a cylindrical steel pressure vessel (20)
with an outside diameter of 500 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm. The vessel is
subjected to an internal pressure of 4 MPa. If for this unit 20 bolts are to be used on a
550 mm bolt circle diameter, what is the required bolt diameter at the root of the threads?
Set the allowable'stress for the bolts at 80 MPa, of which 45 MPa is the initial stress.
What circumferential stress is developed in the vessel? Discuss the scenario, if the
internal pressure causes the stress in the bolts to be twice the value of the initial stress?

(b) The aluminum column is fixed at its bottom and is braced at its top by cables so as to (10)
prevent movement at the top along the x axis as shown in Fig. 8(b). If it is assumed to be
fixed at its base, determine the largest allowable load P that can be applied. Use a factor

of safety for buckling of 2.0. Take EaF 70 GPa, A= 7.5(10.3) m2, 1x= 61.3(10,6) m , 1y=
23.2(10.6) m4. Discuss the justification of using the Euler's equation for solving this

problem.

4. (a) Select the lightest W shape section (using the attached table) that with support an axial
load of 100 kN on a length of 10m. Use AISC column specification with yield strength =
250 MPa and E = -210 OPa. One end of the column is fixed and other end hinged. (20)
(b) A W 250 x 67 section (use the attached table) is to be used as a column with a length of
10 m, both ends fixed condition. The column supports an axial load of 130 kN and an
eccentric load of 100 kN acting on the y axis (as shown in the table). Determine the
maximum eccentricity for the 100 kN load using AISC specification with (Jyp = 250 MPa and
E = 200 OPa. (15)

5. (a) A rectangular piece of wood, 50 mm by 100 mm in cross section, is used as a


compression block as shown in Fig. 5(a). Determine the maximum axial force P that can be
safety applied to the block if the compressive stress in the wood is limited to 20 MN/m2 and

the shearing stress parallel to the grain is limited to 5 MN/m • The grain makes an angle of

(b) Calculate the increase in stress for each segment of the compound bar showo in Fig. 5(b)
if the temperature increases by lOO°F. Assume that the supports are unyielding and that the

bar is suitably braced against buckling. (10)


(c) As showo in Fig. 5(c), a rigid bar with negligible mass is pinned at 0 and attached to two
vertical rods. Assuming that the rods were initially stress free, what maximum load P can be
applied without exceeding stresses of 150 MPa in the steel rod and 70 MPa in the bronze

6. (a) A water supply pipe is 2 m in diameter and built oflongitudinal wood staves held in place
by hoops of 24-mm round steel rod. What spacing of hoops is required when the pressure is

350 kPa? The allowable stress in the steel rod is 140 MPa. (15)
(b) Two thick-walled cylinders of the same dimensions, outer diameter being twice the inner
diameter, are subjected to fluid pressure. One cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure
and the other is subjected to external fluid pressure. Determine the ratio of pressures if the

magnitude of the maximum tangential stress of each cylinder is the same. (20)

7. (a) A solid steel shaft is loaded as shown in Fig. 7(a). Using G = 83 GPa, determine the
required diameter of the shaft if the shearing stress is limited to 60 MPa and the angle of

rotation at the free end is not to exceed 4°. (15)


(b) A rigid bar, hinged at one end, is supported by two identical springs as showo in Fig.
7(b). Each spring consists of 20 turns of 10-rom wire having a mean diameter of 150 mm.

spring wire. (20)

8. (a) A round bar oflength 2 m and diameter 100 cm is subjected to an axial load of 100 kN. If
the elongation of the bar due to the application of the load is 10 cm, find the true stress and

true strain developed in the bar. (5)

1. (a) A rigid horizontal bar of negligible mass is connected to two rods as shown in Fig.
1(a). If the system is initially stress-free, calculate the temperature change that will
cause a tensile stress of 90 MPa in the brass rod. Assume that both the rods are

subjected to the same change in temperature. (15)


(b) A circular bar is bent into the shape of a half-ring and supported in a vertical plane
as shown in Fig. 1(b). Determine the horizontal movement of points C and B. Solve the

problem by Castigliano's theorem. (20)

2. (a) A shaft composed of segments AC, CD, and DB is fastened to rigid supports and
loaded as shown in Fig. 2(a). For bronze, G = 35 GPa; for aluminum, G = 28 GPa, and
for steel, G = 83 GPa. Determine the maximum torsional shearing stress developed in

segment CD and angle of twist of point D with respect to point C. (15)


(b) A rigid bar of negligible weight transfers a load P to a combination of three helical
springs arranged in parallel as shown in Fig. 2(b). Three springs are made up of the
same material and the spring wires are of the same diameter. They are of same free
length before loading. The numbers of coils in those three springs are 10, 12, and 15,
respectively. The mean coil diameters are in the ratio of 1:1.2:1.4, respectively. Find
the distance x as shown in the figure such that the rigid bar remains horizontal after the

application of load P. Solve the problem in terms of dimension a. (20)

3. (a) A sphere is 50 mm mean diameter with a wall 0.5 mm thick. It has an inside
pressure 0.5 MPa greater than the outside pressure. Calculate the change in diameter

and change in volume. Take E = 212 GPa, 'and v = 0.25. (15)


(b) A thick-walled cylinder is built up by shrinking a tube of 25.4 mm thickness on a
hollow cylinder having an outside diameter of 150 mm and an inside diameter of 100
mm, thereby causing a contact pressure of 27:6 MPa. What is the greatest internal
pressure that can be applied to the assembly without exceeding a tangential stress of

96.5 MPa at the inner surface? (20)

4. A 60° strain}osette attached to the aluminum skin of an airplane fuselage measures the
following strains: €a = 10-4, €b = -2xl 0-4,€c = 4xlO-4. If E = 70 GPa and Poisson's ratio
v = 1/3, (i) compute the principal stresses and the maximum shearing stress and their
directions, (ii) the normal and shearing stresses on planes whose normals are at 45° and

7. (a) On the surface of a microprocessor package, the stress distribution at a point has

are 350 MPa and 125 MPa, respectively, determine the smallest diameter dj of the top
disk, the diameter d2 within the support space, and the diameter d3 of the hole in the

(b) A rigid beam with negligible weight is pinned at one end and attached to two vertical
rods as shown in Figure for Q. No. 1(b). The beam was initially horizontal before the
load W = 100 kN was applied. Find the vertical movement of the point of the beam where

2. (a) A steel propeller shaft is to transmit 4.5 MW at 3 Hz without exceeding a shearing stress
of 50 MPa or twisting through more than lOin a length of 26 diameters. If G = 83 GPa,
compute the minimum diameter of the shaft required. (18)
(b) The cylinder for a hydraulic press has an inside diameter of 300 mm. Detennine the
wall thickness required if the cylinder is to withstand an internal pressure of 60 MPa

3. (a) A column with the C-section dimensions as shown in Figure for Q. No. 3(a) is to be
used for carrying 15 kN axial load. The column has a length 0.8 m. If the Young's
modulus and the yield stress of the material are 200 GPa and 250 MPa, respectively,

(b) A bill board with 50 kg weight is to be supported by a 6 m long hollow circular cross
section column with aluminum material (E = 80 GPa, cry = 120 MPa). If the distance of the

4. (a) The state of stress at a point on the surface of a microprocessor component is shown

0.7 mm. Determine the force in rods AB and EF caused by increased in temperature.
Rods AB and EF are made of steel, and each has a cross sectional area of 125 mm2. CD is

7. (a) In a well drilling operation, the deep end of the drill pipe is subjected to a torsional
resistance of 10 kN -m. Furthermore, the friction of soil creates a linear torque distribution
(0 at the surface and 500 N-m at the deep end) along the pipe length. Determine the
maximum shear stress developed in the pipe. Consider the pipe length of 60 m and the
OD and ID of the pipe are 100 mm and 80 rnrn, respectively. What is the relative angle of
