LESSON
HUMANITIES AND ARTS
A. What are the Humanities?
The word Humanities comes from the Latin “humanus,” which means human, cultured,
refined. They are the branches of learning based on the philosophy and ethical perspective of
humanism, which emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and
collectively, and generally prefers individual thought and evidence over established faith.
List of Subjects Covered in Humanities Courses, also called as Forms of Arts

• Painting
• Sculpture
• Architecture
• Photography
• Literature
• Music
• Theatre
• Dance
• Film
Painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography are collectively called as the VISUAL
ARTS. Music and literature, on the other hand, are referred to as AUDITORY ARTS. Finally,
theatre, dance and film are classified
as COMBINED / PERFORMING ARTS. Visual, Auditory, and Combined Arts are classified
as Types of Arts.
B. Why Study the Humanities?
Humanities make us more human-in the very best sense of that word “human”. As a
consequence of our encounter with the arts, we value and appreciate beautiful things and also
we understood different beliefs, culture, creation and understanding of individuals
C. How to Study Humanities : Text, Context, and Subtext
TEXT - it refers to art‟s medium (that is, what is made of), its form (its outward shape), and
its content (the subject it describes).

Address: Sto. Domingo, Quirino, Isabela 3321

CONTEXT - it refers to the description of the historical and cultural background or

environment of the artwork. To determine the context, we ask:
1. In what time and place did the artifact originate?
2. How did it function within the society in which it was created?
3. Was the purpose of the piece decorative, didactic, magical, propagandistic?
4. Did it serve the religious or political needs of the community or both?
SUBTEXT - it refers to its secondary and implied meanings. The subtext embraces the
emotional or intellectual messages embedded in, or implied by, a work of art.
What is Art?
According to the Greeks, art is an imitation or reality. Art is imitative or representational: it
copies something in the real world. Perhaps this is the simplest and earliest view on the nature
and meaning of art.
PLATO - (idealist), art is an imitation of an imitation. In Plato‟s Republic, he uses the
example of a bed. The painting of a bed is a copy of a concrete bed, which is itself a copy of
the ideal form of a bed. If art is imitating an imitation of an ideal, then, art is doubly divorced
from reality and doubly inferior.
ARISTOTLE - (realist), art is still an imitation, but not of the ideal world like Plato but the
real (physical) world. Art is a mirror of reality around us and within us.
According to the Romantics, art is primarily the expressions of feelings or intentions of the
artist. Not solely an imitation of an external reality, as earlier understood, but the expressions
of an internal reality. And the best way to interpret art is by trying to understand the original
intention of the maker of the artwork itself - the painter, the writer, the composer.
TOLSTOY - art is the contagion of feeling. This means that the artist expresses feeling
through the artwork which in turn evokes that feeling in the viewers. Art is interpreted or
judged by the quality of feelings it expresses and “infects” with us.
CROCE - art is the expression of emotion. Emotions are very real and a primal type of
knowledge. When expressed and evoked by great works of art, it becomes powerful, often
cosmic.
COLLINGWOOD - the original intention of the artist is the actual art.
The inward psychological vision of the artist is so primordial and it does not matter whether
or not that vision ever got translated into art forms for the public
The Values of Art
Great works of art are distinguished by the following qualities. These are:

1. Aesthetic Value - a quality which appeals to our sense of beauty.

2. Intellectual Value - an artwork stimulates thought.
3. Suggestiveness - the quality associated with the emotional power of art.
4. Spiritual Value - the capacity to inspire is part of the spiritual value of art.
5. Permanence - a great artwork endures.
6. Universality - great art is timeless and timely.
7. Style - great artworks are marked as much by their memorable substance as well as their
distinctive style.
8. Form - it is the organization, arrangement, or framework of an artwork; the manner or style
of constructing, arranging, and coordinating the parts of a composition for a pleasing or
effective result.

LESSON
VISUAL ARTS

A. Painting
Painting is the application of paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface. It is the art of
creating meaningful effects on a flat surface by the use of pigments.
Different media are used in painting. Each medium exerts a pronounced effect on the finished
product, is capable of varied treatment, and determines its own stroke. The medium is
commonly applied to the base with a brush but other implements such as knives, sponges, and
airbrushes, can be used.
In art, the terms painting describe both the act and the result of the action. Paintings may have
for their support such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay, leaf, copper
or concrete, and may incorporate multiple other materials including sand, clay, paper, and
gold leaf.
B. Functions of Painting
The function of paintings has evolved over time. They let us know the way of living of the
early times through their drawing. This is one reason why we can see paintings displayed in
museums because of their historical value.
Nowadays, paintings serve a different purpose. Artists continuously create paintings to
symbolize present situations. Even still life paintings are considered art because a part of the
artists‟ persona will certainly remain.
Paintings bring a different effect on the atmosphere of the
room where it is decorated. They are always thought to be elegant
pieces of artwork and this image of sophistication rebounds to the
room as well. For those who do not know much about art settle
with replicas of renowned paintings.
The perfect paintings are those that resonate into our heart, mind and emotions once we see
them. These impacts to us simply mean we feel and understand what the painter is trying to
convey and resembles part of our personality.
PRE – TEST
C. Painting Media
There are six major painting media, each with specific individual characteristics, all of them
use the following three basic ingredients:
Pigments are granular solids incorporated into the paint to contribute color.

The binder is the actual film-forming component of paint. The binder holds the pigment until
it‟s ready to be dispersed onto the surface. The solvent (also called the “vehicle”) controls the
flow and application of the paint. It‟s mixed into the paint, usually with a brush, to dilute it to
the proper viscosity, or thickness, before it‟s applied to the surface. Once the solvent has
evaporated from the surface the remaining paint is fixed there. Solvents range from water to
oil-based products like linseed oil and mineral spirits.

1. Encaustic paint mixes dry pigment with a heated beeswax binder. The mixture is then
brushed or spread across a support surface.
2. Tempera paint combines pigment with an egg yolk binder, then thinned and released
with water. It dries quickly to a durable matte finish.
3. Fresco painting is used exclusively on plaster walls and ceilings. The medium of fresco
has been used for thousands of years, but is most associated with its use in Christian
images during the Renaissance period in Europe.
4. Oil paint is the most versatile of all the painting media. It uses pigment mixed with a
binder of linseed oil. Linseed oil can also be used as the vehicle, along with mineral spirits
or turpentine.
5. Acrylic paint was developed in the 1950‟s and became an alternative to oils.
Pigment is suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion binder and uses water as the vehicle.
The acrylic polymer has characteristics like rubber or plastic.
6. Watercolor is the most sensitive of the painting media. It reacts to the lightest touch of
the artist and can become an over worked mess in a moment.
D. Elements of Painting
Painting can be analyzed by considering a variety of aspects of it individually. These aspects
are often called the elements of painting. Here are some elements of painting/art that are used
by artists working in various media:
1. Distance
There are three distances to look for in a painting:
a. foreground
b. background
c. middle ground

2. Color
Color has three main characteristics:

a. Hue - the name of any color as found in its pure state in the spectrum or rainbow, or that
aspect of any color.
b. Value - it refers to the brightness or darkness of a color.
c. Intensity - the brightness or dullness of color

3. Light
Light affects the color of the subject and objects in the painting look real and solid if the artist
shows the way light falls on them. The use of light and darkness also conveys particular
moods in a painting.

4. Line
Artists use various types of lines to express the ideas and feelings in their paintings. In
painting, the term “line” can refer to the identifiable path created by a point moving in a
space. It is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define
the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or
thin. They lead your eye around the composition and can communicate information though
their character and direction.

5. Shape and Form

a. Geometric shape – include mathematical, named shapes such as squares, rectangles,
circles cubes, spheres, and cones.
b. Organic shapes and form – Organic shapes are often found in nature, but man made
shapes can also imitate organic form.

6. Space
The area around the primary objects in a work of art is known as negative space while the
spaced occupied by the primary objects is known as positive space.
7. Composition
Artists seriously plan how they will arrange elements like color, line and shapes in their
paintings. This is called composition which help to draw the
viewer‟s eyes into the picture and guides him/her as he/she walks through the painting.
8. Perspective

Perspective means view point or vantage point. In visual art, it has to do with how much
and /or how well a work of art tries to show threedimensionality. Through perspective artist
convey 3-dimension space.
9. Texture
Is the surface quality of a shape- rough, smooth, soft, hard glossy, etc. texture can be physical
or visual? All objects have a physical texture.
10. Symbols
A symbol can be defined as something which has a special meaning or
a special message. Artist use symbols to express such as ideas as life, death, hope and faith in
god

LESSON
A. Sculpture
Sculpture comes from the Latin word “Sculpure” which means “To carve”. The Oxford
English Dictionary defines sculpture as “originally, the process or art of carving or engraving
a hard material so as to produce designs, or figures in relief, intaglio, or in the round.”
B. Functions of Sculpture
Sculpture is produced for numerous reasons and functions in a range of different ways. Many
people produce sculptures that depicts divinities or cultural heroes in human or animal form
which would have been used in a religious or ritual context other type of sculpture celebrate
kingship and power , commemorate ancestor, or relate to beliefs about death and afterlife
C. Kinds of Sculpture
1. Relief Sculpture is the oldest form of sculpture art. It is the sculpture that projects in
varying degrees from a Two-dimensional background.
2. Free standing also known as sculpture-in–a- round. It is most recognizable to modern
people it can be view from any angle.
3. Kinetic Sculpture moves by either mechanical power, or moves under the power or
wind or water.
4. Assemblage is a non-traditional sculpture pieced together from found or scavenged
items. Re combining found objects.
D. Elements of Design in Sculpture
Many design elements combine to create a work of art. Design elements are things that make
possible to create art. Without them, things would have no color, shape, outline, or space.
1. Scale
Refers to its size relative to the size of its surrounding environment
2. Color
Is the way light waves are absorbed or reflected by everything around us 3. Line
Is path of a moving point. In sculpture, the most important kind of line is contour line or the
outline that form edges of the sculpture to create its silhouette.
4. Shape
Shape has no depth as it is two-dimensional. Lines cross or intersect creating a shape which
has a certain width and height

6. Texture
Is the way something feels when you touch it.
7. Value
Is the lightness or darkness of a color
8. Form
A form is three-dimensional it has height, width, and thickness. Because sculptures are by
nature space occupying and three-dimensional, they are forms.
F. Four (4) Basic Sculptures Techniques
1. Carving
Is a process in which the artist subtract or cuts away from a solid material to reach the desired
from.
2. Modeling
Is the process of manipulating soft materials to create a threedimensional form. Requires soft
substances that can be easily and rapidly stamped by sculptors.
3. Casting
Is a method of obtaining the permanence of a modeled work by making a mold and casting in
a durable material such as brain?
4. Construction and Assemblage
Consist of combining and joining various materials.

LESSON

A. Architecture
Architecture is the planning, designing, and construction of buildings and other physical
structures. In relation to buildings, architecture has to do with the form, space, and ambiance
that reflect functional, technical, social, environmental, and aesthetic considerations. It
requires the creative manipulation and coordination of material, technology, light, and
shadow.
Combining arts and sciences, the transcendentally beautiful and the completely pragmatic,
architecture is an all-encompassing art. It is the art and science of creating beautiful spaces, of
designing structures, of constructing buildings. Architecture has to be a perfect blend of
durability,usability, beauty, and economy.
B. Functions of Architecture
Architecture is an art based on the principles of utility and beauty where form follows
function.
Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design
in the 20th century. This means that the purpose of a building should be the starting point for
its design.
Each building has a form to meet its purpose. The structure is designed according to needs by
its organization, individual space definition, proportion, scale, and symmetry. One can
evaluate how well the architecture functions by critiquing the structure‟s use of these
elements of design. If the building‟s form is appropriate for its use, the building is evaluated
positively; if the building‟s form is excessive or unfit for its use, then the building is
evaluated negatively.
C. Media Used in Architecture
Materiality in architecture is the concept of, or applied use of, various materials or substance
in the medium of building. Architecture uses building materials as its media in the
construction of buildings and other physical structures.
Many naturally occurring substances, such as clay, rocks, sand, and wood, even twigs, and
leaves, have been used to construct buildings. Apart from naturally occurring materials, many
man-made products are in use, some more and some less synthetic.
A man-made material is a material that is manufactured through human effort often using
natural raw materials. A list of these man-made materials would be glass, steel, and concrete
cement. They provide the makeup of habitats and structures including homes.

D. Elements of Design in Architecture

We perceived information about works of art through or senses. By carefully examining a
work of art, we learn to organize our sensory perceptions by identifying them as elements of
art. Architects use sensory elements in the preliminary design of a building. Beginning with
lines and shapes, the architect draws an inception of how a building will look after it is
constructed. The sensory elements of architecture include:
1. Line
In architecture, lines are often suggested by the structural materials designers choose for their
buildings such as the random lines of natural stone or the sleek lines created by beams of steel
or walls of glass. Modern buildings often use bold lines created by structural steel cross
bracing.
Lines can also be suggested by the shape and massing of a building.
For instance, a building can look horizontal or vertical.
2. Shape
A shape is made when a line is closed and space is enclosed. A twodimensional shape is one
that is drawn on a flat surface such as paper. A three-dimensional shape is one that takes up
real space. Architectural drawings often try to indicate what the proposed building will look
like as a three-dimensional form by the use of perspective.
3. Texture
Texture is the apparent look or feel of the surface of an art object.
Texture is a tactile property and requires touching to be appreciated. Once we know how a
material feels, however, we can interpret a texture with our eyes and can tell visually how it
might feel. An architect creates texture in building by certain choices of materials. Heavy,
jagged stone may be used in a building to give it a rough texture, whereas delicate, carved
wood can give a structure a light and airy look
Texture can also be suggested by the rich layering of shapes and forms on a building.
Architects add visual interest to their buildings by using decorative building materials such as
siding, stone, and woodcarving, or they can vary the pattern of concrete forms.
4. Color
Color is an element of our visual perception that is related to how our eyes perceive light. We
differentiate these perceptions and name them red, blue, yellow, etc. Architects use color in
the choice of materials used to construct a building. These color choices can be quite subtle,
such as using a warm, yellowtoned concrete instead of a cold gray base, or using a brownish
brick instead of the traditional red.

However, the architect must consider the color effect of every element of a building‟s
construction, from the earthy colors of primary construction materials like wood, stone, brick
and marble, to the expansive variety of colors available for paint, doors, windows, siding, and
trim. Once chosen, the architectural drawings and sample boards tell a contractor exactly
what color building materials to use when constructing a structure.
5. Light and Dark
Light and dark are relative perceptions of light. Architects use the concept of light and dark as
they create visual interest on a building by choosing shapes that create a sensation of depth.
When some shapes stick out, they leave others in shadow. Narrow openings often appear
dark, as in a tunnel, a broad, flat spaces look light. Materials can be used to vary the light
quality of a building. For instance, a band of tinted window gives the illusion of a dark space
wrapping around a building.
6. Space
Space is the relative position of one three-dimensional object to another.
Space is one of the most important considerations an architect must think about while
designing a building because the sizes of rooms and hallways, the height of ceilings and the
ease of entering and exiting each living area must carefully match the function of the
building.
Architects chose dimensions of rooms to match the number of people who will occupy the
space and the amount of activity that will occur in it. To make a building more interesting,
architects will experiment with aesthetic qualities of space by varying the width and height of
rooms through which people will move. Architects also speak of space as the amount of land
that will be occupied by a building on a site. The remaining are is called open space.

LESSON

A. Music
Music is the Art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds or both to produce beauty of
form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
Music is different things to different people. It has a transcendental significance that is
captured in the beautiful patterns of Nature and architecture, a kind of “frozen music”. It can
bridge cultures in a universal conversation that is beyond intellect or reason, but which is
heartfelt. It brings the joy of unexpected and beautiful sound. Music-and singing in
particulartakes us to a world apart: a world beyond self and ego, a place of emotion that
touches the soul.
Music is pure magic. It moves us and soothes us. It stimulates. It makes us want to dance or
sing. It makes us feel happy or sad, inspired or uplifted.
It affects our mood in all kinds of infinite ways. It can be exquisitely subtle or wildly raucous
from a lullaby to a war cry for revolution.
Music also tells stories, break hearts, reduces us to tears, or seduces us into falling in love,
over and over again. It is a universal language. It is human creation from a divine source,
perhaps.
Music is culture from every origin; it is identity and belonging. It is history and invention. It
is remembering and forgetting. Music is symmetry, rebellion, genius, prodigy, mastery,
virtuoso, dazzling, breath-taking, spellbinding, and extraordinary.
B. Subject in Music
The 2 main types of music according to subject matter are as follows:
1. Program Music
Program Music is a type of art music that attempts to musically render an extramusical
narrative. That narrative itself might be offered to the audience in the form of program notes,
inviting imaginative correlations with the music.
2. Absolute Music
Absolute music (pure music) on the other hand, is music that is not explicitly “about”
anything; in contrast to program music, it is nonrepresentational and is primarily intended to
be appreciated without any particular reference to the outside world.

D. Music Media
Music is an art form whose media are sound and silence.
Sound is produced by vibrations. Sound is produced when an object vibrates and it is what
can be perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing.
Vibrations can be regular or irregular. Regular vibrations create pleasing sounds or tone.
Irregular vibrations create unpleasing sound and is usually considered as noise.
Silence is the absence of sound or noise.
E. Qualities of Sounds
Sound has several qualities:
1. Pitch
Pitch refers to the relative highness or lowness of sound. This is the characteristics of sound
that tells us the difference between a high sound and low sound.
2. Intensity/Amplitude
Intensity refers to the loudness and softness of sound. This is the characteristics of sound that
tells us the difference between a loud sound and a soft sound.
3. Duration
Duration refers to the length of time that the sound is heard. This is the characteristics of
sound that tells us the difference between a short sound and a long sound.
4. Timbre/Tone color
Timbre or tone color refers to the unique quality of an instrument‟s sounds which enables us
to differentiate one sound from another sound. It describes the difference between two tones
played in the same pitch and volume.
5. Distance
Distance, also associated with reverberation time, is the perception of how near or far away a
sound‟s source.

It is a type of art that generally involves the movement of the body, often rhythmic and to
music.
Dance provides a way of learning-one that develops communication abilities, problem solving
techniques, and creative and critical thinking skills along with kinesthetic abilities. At its core,
the goal of dance education is to engage students in artistic experiences through the process of
creation, performance and response.

B. Functions of Dance
Human beings probably dance even before there was a word for it.
Rhythmic bodily movement is instructive. It connects people, even if unconsciously, to the
rhythms of nature. Dance springs from a human desire for personal expression and social
connection.
People dance for all kinds of reason – to mourn, to celebrate to heal, to give thanks to
preserve cultural heritage and treasured legends, to demonstrate physical prowess, to assert
individuality, to provoke and to entertain.

C. Medium of Dance
The medium of dance is the Human body itself as dance makes use of the human body for
expression.
Others search for movement with their dancers. They go on a journey together, discovering,
one dependent on the other. The dancer‟s gender, body, personality, creativity, technique
biography, are all essential elements through which idea is brought to life.

D. Elements of Dance
Dance has it own content, vocabulary, skills and techniques, which must be understood and
applied to be proficient in the art. The elements of dance are the foundation concepts and
vocabulary for developing movement skills as well as understanding dance as an art form.

1. Body
The art of dance takes place in and through the human body.
In dance, the body is the mobile figure or shape, felt by the dancer, seen by the others. The
body is sometimes relatively still and sometimes changing as the dancer moves in place or
travels through the dance area.

movements, lifts, and catches and even everyday movements such as walking.
3. Space

Dancers interact with space in myriad ways.
They may stay in one place and move parts of their body or their whole body, or they may
travel from one place to another.
4. Time
The keyword for the element of time is when Human movement is naturally rhythmic in the
broad sense that we alternate activity and rest.
5. Energy
