Health and safety engineer

HSE engineers inspect facilities, machinery and safety equipment to identify and correct potential
hazards. HSE engineers must have a bachelor's degree, usually in environmental health and safety or an
engineering discipline

In my second week I was with HSE engineer ,so every day we were checking the site “daily inspection” .
Inspection are necessary to ensure compliance and safety and CDM regulation. (construction design and
management).

we have monitored many irregularities that affect labors safety and health same as

-house keeping

-cable management
`

-scaffolding problems(plates not steady ,handrail should be 90cm at least)

-bad connection of electricity

-lack of ventilation in some places

-the labors doesn’t wear all PPE "personal protective equipments"

The procedure of the HSE engineer is to write a report on the irregularities and send the workers out of
the building until the error is fixed and then they can continue the work.

soil compaction
Soil compaction is the processing in which stress applied to the soil causes intensification where air is
displaced between the pores and the soil grains. When the stress that causes condensation due to the
displacement of water (or other liquid) is applied from the soil granules, fusion has occurred and not
pressure. Usually, the pressure is due to the pressure of heavy machinery on the soil.

The compaction of the soil should be 95% or more ,because less than this percent will make drop in soil
which will affect in concrete by weak it and that’s will be shown as cracks in concrete.

*The machines they used fore compaction in the site:

-Wacker Neuston
`

-Hamm

De-watering
Dewatering is the removing of water from solids or soil by wet classification, centrifugation, filtration or
any similar solid liquid separation processes, such as removal of residual liquid from the filtration mold
by a filter press as section of various industrial processes.

Dewatering in construction, non-irrigation, or water control are common terms used to describe the
removal or discharge of groundwater or surface water from a riverbed, construction site, diver, or mine
shaft, by pumping or evaporation. At the construction site, this dewatering process may be carried out
before drilling underground for foundations, cushions or basement space to lower the water level.

Dewatering process continuing until established process. Continuing use De-watering method till that
the weight of construction is 1.5 times the water removed.

Two methods of de-watering used in this project:

1- Well points
2- Deep well system
`

Pile Foundation
The foundations provide support to the structures, as they are transported to soil or rock layers
with sufficient durability and suitable leveling properties. There is a very wide range of
foundation types available, suitable for different applications, depending on considerations,
such as:

-The nature of pregnancy requiring support.

-Ground conditions.

-The presence of water.

-Durability of materials.

-cost.

Pile foundation is a kind of deep foundation, is actually a thin long cylinder or column made of
materials such as steel or concrete which are used to support the structure and convey the load
to the desired depth either by the final bearing or skin friction.
`

*For piling when they pouring concrete they pour 1-1.5m more than they need because usually
in the bottom of the hole there is some dirt , this dirt will rise to the top , later the cut the extra
part of the concrete from the top ,so that the concrete remains clean from bottom.

Civil inspector
The civil inspector’s job is to inspect the work done in the site .. when the civil inspector notice a
problem in the site he can make either S.O.R or N.C.R.

S.O.R “ site observation report”:

Given a note to the contractor until the adjustment to a point contrary to the criteria .If he modifies it.
The S.O.R cancels ,if he does not modifies it.it turns to N.C.R.

N.C.R “ non-conformance report” :

It is issue against the work which are not complying spaces or contract document drams.

It is raised by client to the contractor whenever there is deviation from the standards and specifications
-After raising the N.C.R immediate action must be taken from contractor side for rectification
`

When I was in the site we have made an Site observation report about problems we have noticed

1- Casting of pile head visible of honeycomb

2- Gap from pile

There is two types of concrete test used in all projects:

Slump test and cube test.

Slump test: it is a measurment of concrete workability or fluidity.

- Contains of 3 layers each layer 25 tamp after that the slump cone removed they measure
the hight of concrete to check if it has the same standards
`

Cube test: it is the process by which a batch of concrete is tested for strength and durability,\.
This test is done by making a cube of concrete in a machine that designed to make concrete
blocks, curing the concrete and removing it to perform tes in two period 7 and 28 days.

Courses:
I have been taken 3 cources with engineers from TAMKEEN program these courses was about

1- QA an QC
2- Procurements
3- Health an safetey
`

1- QA and QC “quality control and Quality assurance”

QA: It is a set of activities for ensuring quality in products. The activities are focus on
identifying defects in the actual products produced.

QC: It is a set of activities for ensuring Quality in the processes by which products are
developed.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
1-Management commitment

2-Customer Focus

3-Project Quality Policy

4-Project Quality Objectives

5-Project Key Measures

6- Project Risk management

2-Procurment:
It is involves a series of activities and processes that are necessary for an organization to
acquire necessary products or services from the quality suppliers at the best value.

rights of procurement:
`

1- Right Quality
2- Right quantity
3- Right place
4- Right time
5- Right value

3-Health and safety :

Many people are killed as a result of being in the line of fire in the construction industry More
attention is required to towards this issue Everybody on site must be aware about the risks of
being in the line of fire All injures associated with line of fire could be avoided by simple
precautions
`

*You put yourself in the line of fire;

When you place yourself, or any part of yourself in a position where you are directly exposing
yourself to a hazard

There is some precautions to be followed by labors for safety:

1-Always wear proper eye protection and use a welding screen.

2-Always wear proper P.P.E

3-Keeping a safe distance from the line of fire

`

4-Ensure your activities will not be hazardous to other people in the vicinity

5-Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained

6-Secure loads properly especially pipes and other rolling objects

7-Keep out of the line of fire while loading / unloading

8-Never work under suspended loads

9-Do not exceed the lifting capacity

The steps workers can do to keep themselves and co-workers out of the Line of Fire

 Always be alert

 Learn to recognize the Line of Fire

 Report any hazards or dangerous situations

 Follow the rules & use safe work practices

 Use proper PPE

The Traffic can be Controlled inside the site by putting:

 Regular site traffic control system

 Parking areas (light vehicles & heavy plant)

 Designated bus stops

 One way systems

 Speed limits.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, being part of the Musanada program over the past seven weeks has been one of
the most knowledgeable experiences I have had during my journey while still an engineer. I
learned how to master the important engineering skills required in the field of work such as
teamwork, problem solving and many other technical skills. Moreover, she gained some social
skills in how to deal with colleagues from different cultures and how to manage work with
`

them. The Operations Efficiency Department has done a great job in achieving the objectives of
HCT.

Musanada provides a good work environment, they provide the equipment needed to work .
compared to the tasks I do now which are simple. As a human being we always strive to
improve your skills but as an employee I want to improve my engineering and social skills to
gain experience so I have a higher-level job. I think the college should provide us with more
classes that have more open environment so it can simulate real-life work instead of the usual
closed environment when teaching.
