First of all let’s say thanks to God, because of His blessing and mercy I can follow this competition in a great condition Second, I would like to say thanks for the time and opportunity that given to me, so in this nice occasion I can make a video to deliver my speech. Thus, I would like to say thank you to all of you for watching this video in this beautiful occasion. My name is Giovanni Gabrielle Susanto and today I am representing Cahaya Bangsa School as a participant in this speech competition with the tittle:
UNITY IN DIVERSITY: We are One
So, I hope you can enjoy my speech that I will tell you in a second.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
"Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization." - Mahatma Gandhi. From that quote, I would like to say that Unity in Diversity is a phrase or may I say concept that refers and explain about togetherness of in spite of the presence of huge diversity. Unity in Diversity also based on where the individual or social cultural differences in physical attributes, skin colour, castes, creed, cultural and religious practices etc. It is crucial and very important to respect and support each other no matter what our culture, background, gender, orientation, or other differences may be. I’m sure we’ve seen lots of cultural differences in our daily life, especially when we live here in Indonesia, a country with hundreds of different cultures. It may seem really positive and all around good, but in the mean time, cultural difference also create a lot of conflicts, such as racisms and cultural harassment. Well Ladies and Gentlemen, This kind of conflict usually take off in an arena with people that still has lots of stereotypes and ethnocentrism toward other culture and thinks that their culture is higher and better than other culture that is around them. And me myself have seen these type of behaviour around me and I think that it is time for us, especially the young generation to make a difference toward this bad habits around us. Starting of with spreading education, a lot of people still lacks in this type of education and I think it is the best for all of us to improve the education about tolerance and respect towards other people, we have to start educating people that still has bad stereotypes and tell the that all culture are the same and we need to respect and tolerate each other, we have to start doing this especially to parents so that they can also teach their children to respect each other and destroys these stereotype so that they can actually build good habits to their family. And also, teachers in school also need to really teach their students about these, because it’s not rare for us to see lots of bullying in school and the main reason of that happening is because of cultural differences and social status.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
That is why this thing is really important to teach in every school so that students can spread this behaviour and respect each other with the difference that they have. Its also not just for students, but this is also for everyone including adults, cause adults also have conflicts with this problem especially when this include social status whereas people in upper class was treated like a king and people with lower class was just ignored and treated badly. It is very important for us to spread awareness about this and start to educate everyone of us in this country. We, as the next generation of this country have to improve the quality of human resources in this country, because Indonesia is a really wonderful and unique country that is filled with hundreds of culture and we have to take a step ahead with utilising advanced technology around us to educate everyone in this country. If unity is shown by all of us, it will give us global recognition that is very advantageous for us. And last but not least, Unity in Diversity will help in growth and development of our wonderful country.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to conclude my speech with this phrase “United we are strong, Divided we fall”. This concept of Unity in Diversity instruct and teaches us that although we are from different castes, creeds, races or religion, these variation and difference cannot keep us divided and we should always be united for the better of our beloved country and it’s people. I think that is all from me, I hope that this speech can bring all of us all together as what I am presenting today. It starts with you. If not you, then who?
