COMMENTS: Planning, Instruction, Assessment of Student Understanding

Miss Madigan:

Gotta say – I’m impressed. What a wonderful way to begin your teaching career! Your preparation was
superb. There is no way this lesson could have been successful without the time you put it. In particular, I
want to compliment you on your instructional structure which seamlessly included an excellent hook that
prompted conceptual understanding. The direct instruction was solid and incorporated effective SmartBoard
technology. In some ways, the Next Gen Kirk Weiler curriculum keeps it easy to prepare daily lessons, but it
also limits your creativity. I certainly appreciate how you’ve modified the e math instruction to precisely fit
the needs and abilities of DMS students.

And additional kudos for you working so closely with Mr. K and developing a team approach to your
teaching. The students are engaged and responsive. It appears that this is a good match to begin your student
teaching career.

It appears that you’re making great connections with your students. Special thanks for learning names and
being available for extra help outside of classroom time.

Exponents are traditionally a difficult topic for students to conceptually master. Take pride in those students
that ‘get it’ and be patient with those that struggle. Smile over small learning accomplishments – this is what
makes teaching mathematics worth it.
