My idea for the project was a very simple and fun idea. I think it is important that we

teach kids about social distancing and personal space. This would be considered a health issue

considering we are in a pandemic. The issue would be concerned with making sure kids

understood what personal space is and why it was important. It could also be a basic lesson on

consent. The organization would help by simply bringing awareness to the issue. Many kids feel

uncomfortable with people touching them and need to be empowered to say no. They also need

to know that they cannot just go up and get in other peoples personal space and need to ask for it.

This would also go right into social distancing in this pandemic. We would use posters to put in

schools and museums. They would be anywhere that children are. We could also create programs

in school that teach them through online videos. My slogan I came up with was “embrace

personal space”. My target audience would be elementary aged children. Kids that are just now

beginning to understand what personal space is.

My team had so many great ideas that blew me away. I was honestly embarrassed

because mine was so basic compared to theirs. Chanais Walker came up with a great idea to push

for more affordable housing in California. This is a social justice issue. She wants to make sure

houses have housing caps. She said specifically that she thinks they should be 50% of income for

loans. Next, Vanessa Novoa wanted to address homelessness which I thought would be a great

idea. This is a social justice idea. It also connected well with Chanais Walkers idea. She said her

target would be homeless people and wanted affordable housing, healthcare, and wages. She

wanted solutions that would help homeless people.

Austin Sanders stuck with a similar idea as me to target children. He had the idea to

educate about childhood obesity. This is a health issue. He had great ideas to do this though 5k’s

and marathons. He wanted to reach people though a website to create daily wellness activities

and highlight the importance of nutrition. Next was Katie Byers. She wanted to show people the

importance of hand washing. This is a health issue. She felt that people are not washing their

hands enough and that we needed to do better at why that is important. She stated that since we

are in the middle of a pandemic, that washing hands was more important than ever. She wanted

to advertise that through posters in bathrooms and seminars. She also threw out the idea of

highlighting the importance of walking as a part of our daily lives.

We decided that we would use my idea of highlighting the importance of personal space

would be the one we would use. We thought it would be a fun idea since it is a little more

lighthearted. We are in the middle of a pandemic and teaching children how to do their part is

important. This idea also struck a cord with Vanessa and Chanais since they have children of

their own. They really resonated with that. Something they said was that kids just don’t

understand it so highlighting it for them was important. It could create a generation where

consent was key to our everyday lives and saying no was not uncommon and that it was ok to

say no.

We had a lot of good discussion about our topics. We talked a lot about the affordable

housing issue. Chanais and Vanessa both felt that the issue impacted them personally and had a

lot of insight on it. It was great to listen to them brainstorm about their ideas about what that

would look like. I also learned a lot from them about what they think it should look like. We had

some pushback on some ideas. Austin bright up the idea of pushing for companies to take care of

their employees that are working from home. We had some push back and worries about it being

too political and didn’t want to cause any friction within the team. We all agreed it would be a

good thing to avoid.

After everyone was done, we did a vote on which one we though would be a good option.

We all agreed on the idea that I threw out. Something I didn’t have a lot of clarity with my ideas

was how to get the word out. We talked a lot about what that could look like. Chanais threw out

a really good idea. She said that we should do a thirty second little commercial to inform

children on Nickelodeon, PBS, or another TV station that children would watch. She worried

that it would be a big stretch but we assured her that we could reach for the stars. I talked about

how this could easily play into teaching about consent as well. Vanessa agreed that it would be

good to inform as well. She brought up the idea of teaching children how to say no to people

when they ask if they can get hugs and things like that. I also brought up the fact that we need to

make sure we are incorporating the content we are learning in the class to work effectively as a

team.

Overall we really pitched in to create some really good ideas where everyone contributed.

Everyone had some great ideas and we super supportive of everyone when they were sharing.

We all did an equal input of talking in the meeting. I am excited to work some more with this

team. If we can get that much done in such a small amount of time, I cannot wait to see what we

can all do in the future. We had a great balance of respect and also some pushback that was

healthy for the group.
