Fraction Basics
Instructions  Use a Hershey’s chocolate bar to help understand basic
fraction terms and concepts and the writing of fractions. To successfully
complete this task, the student will:
• count the total number of squares in a whole chocolate bar
• write the equivalent fraction of the whole chocolate bar
• remove specific amounts of chocolate sections
• express the removed sections as fractions

Materials
paper
Hershey’s chocolate bar (1.55 oz)
pencil

Procedure
1. Open the candy packaging and make observations about the chocolate bar. Into how
many sections is the chocolate bar divided?

Fractions
First, discuss the concept that a fraction is a number
Section 1 that represents a part of a whole. Allow the students a
worksheet 1 chance to share real life situations where fractions are
experienced. Write the student responses on the board:
inches, fuel tanks, and so on.
