Read and understand the problem, then study how it was solved.

Rhian and Bea helped their Aunt Belen prepare 72 hot food packs for policemen front
liners in their barangay. Out of it, 𝟏/𝟒 was done by Rhian, 𝟏/𝟑 was done by Bea and
the others were done by Aunt Belen. How many packs did Aunt Belen make?
What are the good traits mentioned in the story presented?
The problem that we have read is a multi-step problem. To solve this, let us follow the
Four-Step Way.

STEPS IN SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS LET’S TAKE THIS ONE BY ONE!

1.Understand the problem

How many packs did Aunt Belen make?
❖ Know what is asked.
72 hot food packs, 𝟏/𝟒 and 𝟏/𝟑
❖ Identify the given facts.
How many of the 72 food packs did Rhian make?
❖ Find the hidden question
How many of the 72 food packs did Bea make?
2. Make a Plan
❖ Determine the operation to be used. Multiplication, Addition and subtraction
𝟏 of 72 = n 𝟏 of 72 = n
❖ Find the mathematical sentence for the hidden question
3
❖ Find the mathematical sentence for the whole problem 72 – [( 𝟏/𝟒 x 72) + ( 𝟏/𝟑 of 72)] = n
4
Or 72 [ 72 x ( 𝟏/𝟒 x 𝟏/𝟑 ) ] = n
3. Do the plan
72– [( 𝟏 x 72) + ( 𝟏 x 72)] = n
❖ Show the solution 4 1 3 1
72– [( 72) + ( 72)] = n
4 3

72 – (18 + 24) = n
72 – 42 = 30 food packs made by Aunt Belen
. Look back
Rhian made 18 food packs
❖ Find if the answer is Aunt Belen made 30 food packs, So, 42
correct and sensible Bea made 24 food packs + 30
72
72 – 42 = 30 Total 42 food packs
What’s More Gwen has 3 dogs. She has 12 sachets of dog foods. She feed Wookie 𝟐/𝟔 of the dog food, 𝟑/5
to Charlie and what still remained to Becca. How much dog food did each dog received

STEPS IN SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS LET’S TAKE THIS ONE BY ONE!

1.Understand the problem

❖ Know what is asked. How much dog food did each dog received?

❖ Identify the given facts. 15 kgs of dog food, 𝟐/6 , 3/4 What is 𝟐/𝟔 of 15?

❖ Find the hidden question How much was fed to Charlie?

What part was given to Becca?

2. Make a Plan
❖ Determine the operation to be used. Multiplication, Addition

❖ Find the mathematical sentence for the 𝟐/𝟔 x 15 = n ; 𝟑/5 x 15 = n

hidden question

❖ Find the mathematical sentence for the 15 – [(𝟐 x 15 ) + ( 𝟑 x 15) ] = n

whole problem 6 5
3. Do the plan 15 – [(𝟐 x 15 ) + ( 𝟑 x 15) ] = n
6 𝟏 5 𝟏
❖ Show the solution
15 – [(30 ) + (45) ] = n
6 5

15 - ( 5 ) + ( 𝟗 ) = n

15 - 14 = 1

. Look back
Wookie – 5 sachets of dog food
❖ Find if the answer is
correct and sensible Charlie – 9 sachets of dog food

Becca – 1 sachets of dog food

TOTAL -15 sachets
Lesson 2 At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

• show that multiplying a fraction by its reciprocal is equal to 1.

INTRODUCTION:
Have you ever come across reciprocals?
If you haven't, let us tell you that reciprocals are the most interesting part of
Mathematics. This is called flipping a flip. The reciprocal of a fraction is simply
exchanging the denominator and numerator of a fraction. A reciprocal, or
multiplicative inverse, is simply one of a pair of numbers that, when multiplied
together, equal 1.These worksheets and lessons will help you understand what a
reciprocal is and how to create them.

During the lockdown period, brothers Rey Nicole and Russell have guessing game.
Rey Nicole: What fraction multiplied by another fraction gives a product of 1?
Russell: I know that! It is when you multiply the fraction by its reciprocal.
What is It
Nicole and Russel are referring to the reciprocal of a fraction.
A reciprocal of a fraction is just when the numerator and denominator switch places.
The reciprocal of a fraction is the inverse of a given fraction that when multiplied, will
give a product of 1.

Let’s study this illustration:

❖ A normal fraction is set up like this: Numerator

Denominator

❖ The reciprocal of that fraction would be: Denominator

Numerator
❖ We would just flip the numerator and denominator: 𝟐 that would equal 9
9 2
❖ The reciprocal of the mixed number is, we would follow the same pattern,
but we would first convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
+ 11
x 4
Now take the reciprocal of 𝟏𝟏 by flipping the numerator and denominator 𝟒
4 11
