Lesson 1

In this lesson, you are expected to:

• solves routine or non-routine problems involving division
without or with any operations of fractions and whole
numbers using appropriate problem solving strategies and
tools
Introduction:
The purpose of this module is to develop a deeper understanding of solving word
problems involving division of fractions. Each learner will benefit greatly from the
different strategies and tools like number lines, models, diagrams and solving using the
steps in solving word problems.
To divide fractions, it is important that you remember the term reciprocal.
What’s In
• Two numbers whose product is 1 are reciprocals of each other
• To find the reciprocal of a fraction make the numerator of the fraction the
denominator of the reciprocal and the denominator of the fraction the
numerator of the reciprocal.
• Mixed fractions must first be converted to improper fractions before the
method can be applied.
• Write the reciprocal of a whole number as fraction.
What’s New
DIVIDING A FRACTION BY ANOTHER FRACTION
Dividing a fraction by another fraction is the same as multiplying the fraction by the
reciprocal (inverse) of the second fraction(divisor).
What Is It

As the whole nation is observing the “Stay at Home” guidelines to protect each one from being
infected with Corona Virus Disease, all Filipino families are assumed to be at home with their
family members. Being a daughter who can be relied on, Janella helps her mother cut 𝟏/𝟒
meter long ribbon from 𝟔/𝟖 meter ribbon to be used as decoration in a pillow case that her
mother is sewing. How many strips of ribbon can she cut?
To solve the problem: 6 ÷ 1
8 4
a. Without b. With cancellation Final Answer
cancellation 1 There are three (3)
6 ÷ 1= 6 x 4= 24 = 3 6 x 4= 6 = 3 1/4s in 6/8
8 4 8 1 8 28 1 2
Janella can cut 3
strips of ribbon
B. Using the Steps in solving word problems

STEPS THINK OF THIS

*Number of strips she can cut

6 m ribbon, 1 m ribbon
8 4

Division
𝟔 ÷𝟏 =N
8 4
a. Without cancellation

6 ÷ 1 = 6 x 4 = 24 = 3
8 4 8 1 8
b. With cancellation
1
6 ÷1 =6 x4 = 6 =3
8 4 8 21 2

Check
a. 6 ÷ 3 = 6 x 1 = 6 = 1
8 8 3 24 4
Final Answer:

There are three 𝟏 in 𝟔

What’s More Camille needs 1/3 m of cloth for a banner. If she has 6/9 m of cloth, how many
banner can she make?
STEPS THINK OF THIS

Number of banners she can make.

6 m ribbon, 1 m ribbon
9 3
Division
6 ÷1
9 3

a. Without cancellation
6 ÷ 1 = 6 x 3 = 18 = 2
9 3 9 1 9
b. With cancellation
6 ÷ 1 = 6 x 31= 6 = 2
9 3 9 31 3

2x1 =2 x1 =2
