Activity / Strategy Opening question: Does anyone know what a square root of a number is?
A square root of a number is a value that gives the original number when multiplied
by itself.
Activity #1: without using calculator find the square root of the following number.
1. √1 5. √ 2 9. √ 8 13. √ −4
2. √4 6. √ 5 10. √ 12
3. √9 7. √ 6 11. √ 20
4. √ 16 8. √ 7 12. √ 45
Notes: 1. Emphasize that the square root of a positive number has two real number
answers. The primary root and the secondary root. Meanwhile a square root of a
negative number has no real root.
2. In finding the square root of a number without using calculator, there three
things to be considered: a) a perfect square number, where the answer is an integer
[ √ 4=± 2 ¿; b) A number that can be factored as a perfect square and non-perfect
square, where the answer is an irrational number [√ 8= √ 4 ( 2 )=± 2 √ 2¿ ;
c) A number that is not a perfect square nor can be factored into a
perfect square or non-perfect square [√ 3= √ 3 ¿ .
Presentation: What do you call the set of equations below? and why do you say so?

4. x 2−50=0
5. x 2+ 25=0
Possible Answer: The equations are quadratic because the highest exponent is 2.
 Now, we are going to talk about solving quadratic equations by extracting square
root.
Analysis
 In the quadratic equations above, we will notice that it has no linear term that can be seen. If
that is so, we can solve those quadratic equations by extracting square root. How? Let us follow
these steps.
1. Isolate the quadratic term and make sure that its coefficient is 1.
2. Take the square root both sides of the equation
3. Simplify when necessary.
 Let us have an example:
2
1. x −25=0
2
Steps: x =25 - isolate the quadratic term.

√ x 2=√ 25 - take the square root both sides of the equation

x=± 5 - roots or solutions

2. 4 x 2=49 4. x 2−50=0
2
4 x 49
Solution: = Solution: x 2=50
4 4

√ x 2= √ 49

√ x 2=√ 25(2)
7
x=± x=± 5 √ 2
2
3. ( 2 x−1 )2−1=0 5. x 2+ 25=0

Solution: ( 2 x−1 )2=1 solution: x 2=−25

√ ( 2 x −1 ) =√ 1
2
√ x 2=√−25

explained by the teacher as fast as possible but in a simple manner.

 Quadratic equation in the form of a x 2 +c=0 (no linear term) can be solved using extracting
square root. Furthermore, a quadratic equation written in the form a ( x ± c )2−k=0can be
solved also by extracting square root.
 Steps in solving quadratic equations by extracting square root
1. isolate the quadratic term and make sure that its coefficient is 1.
Abstraction
2. Take the square root both sides of the equation
3. Solve for x then, simplify when necessary.
Note: when you notice that in the process of your solution, you have seen a negative
number under the square root sign, do not continue anymore your solution instead write
“no real number solution” as your final answer.

SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS BY EXTRACTING SQUARE ROOT

Name: _________________________________________________ Year/Section: ___________________

A quadratic equation of the form a x 2 +c=0 or a ( x ± c )2 +k =0 can be solved by extracting square root. The extracting

square root states that if x 2=c ,then the solution set is √ c or −√ c ,which can be abbreviated as ± √ c . To solve quadratic
equation by extracting square root, do the following:

1. Isolate the quadratic term. 3. Solve for x

2. Take the square root of each side. 4. Simplify your answer.
Examples: 1. x −32=0 ; 2. 3 ( x −4 ) −27=0 3. ( x +7 ) =28 4. x2 +5=0
