Introduction

The surface unit forms the surface package for the downhole monitoring system. There are two physical
configurations to the surface unit: SPT-X and Viewpoint. These two configurations correspond to the software
configuration of the downhole gauge and should match it accordingly.

Operation

The front panel switch controls power to the unit. Once power is applied, the unit will take 42 seconds to start
up. During this time you will see the LCD screen booting up into the program. Once it has completed the boot
up process, it will display the Home Screen. Using the display’s touch screen, you can navigate between
screens on the upper left where the word “Home” is displayed. Below is a description of each screen available
to the user.

HOME SCREEN (VP Version)

Displays the downhole parameter values. For the Viewpoint, the right two meters measure current and
voltage. For the SPT-X gauge, these are replaced be meters that measure delta P and isolation
resistance. Alarm statuses can be seen at the bottom.

Test Digital Outputs:

TEST DIGITAL OUTPUT SCREEN

This screen tests the three relays used on the surface unit found at the green terminal strip:

Relay #1: Pin #25 and Pin #26.

Relay #2: Pin #27 and Pin #28.
Relay #3: Pin #29 and Pin #30.

In this screen there are 6 buttons for the functional test of each of the 3 relays enabled on the sensor panel. An
on button and an off button are designated for each relay.

It is recommended to carry out this test to verify the continuity of the contacts of each relay. In this way you can
be sure that, when setting an alarm, when it is activated the relay will close its dry contacts when the waiting
time for activation of the digital output has expired.

It can also be seen that on the right side of the window there are three indicator lights that will indicate whether
each relay has been activated or deactivated.

• If the light is white, it means that the relay is deactivated.

• If the light is red, it means that the relay has been activated.

It is important to note that when pressing any of these buttons, the system requests a second confirmation to
then execute the order, with a confirmation waiting time of 5 seconds:

By pressing the button again, you can see a confirmation message indicating that the relay has been activated,
and it will remain active for the time selected in the delay variable that we will see later in this manual.

The button again changes the message indicating that the relay is on, the indicator light has changed to red,
and it can be seen that the red LED on the internal unit of the panel has also changed to red:

This test is available for each of the three relays that the panel has.

RELAY # 1: it is intended for connection and disconnection depending on the configuration of the alarms

RELAY # 2 and # 3: it is intended to connect and disconnect any of the channels configured by the user
in the Modbus data table that is explained later in this manual.

The alarm configuration can be done by accessing the "Alarm Configuration" option from the menu:

ALARM CONFIGURATION SCREEN

This screen configures the alarm settings of the surface unit. The “delay in seconds” setting determines how
long after the alarm setting is tripped the alarm will sound. For gauges that do not use discharge pressure
readings, disregard deltaP alarm.

Protection configuration example:

Observe in the following image the configuration corresponding to the variable Pi:

The minimum value of the protection range has been determined to be equal to 253 PSI and the maximum
value of the protection range is equal to 1557 PSI.

In addition, a relay # 1 activation wait time has been configured equal to 60 seconds. Based on this information,
it can be stated that relay # 1 will be activated if the value of the variable “Pi” is outside this range.

Another example with the variable "Tm":

It is observed in the previous image that the minimum value of the protection range is equal to 80 degrees, and
the maximum value is equal to 350 degrees.

We can then affirm based on this information that relay # 1 will only be activated if the value of "Tm" is below
80 degrees or above 350 degrees.

Notice that four meters are presented, two for each channel.

Each channel can be independently configured to measure 0-10V or 0-20 mA, values that can be observed in
the upper meter of each channel:

An example of the application of this function is explained below:

If you want to connect a pressure translator with a measurement range of 0-1000 PSI (0-10V) to the AN0 input,
we can observe the value measured between 0 and 10 volts in the upper meter of the AN0 channel, and in the
meter lower the interpolated value to PSI (between 0 and 1000 PSI):

strip. For each of the two outputs, set the register at the bottom to match the desired parameter to send.

This screen is an overview of all the sensor variables, in which the values can be observed in different units of
measure. In addition, you can observe the value of the output in “mA” for each channel, in the range between
4 and 20 milliamps.

It is possible to select any of the variables in any of the analog channels (AN1 output and AN2 output).

Example:

If the variable "Pd" is selected in the channel "AN1 Output", we can measure an output current corresponding
to the value of the variable.

If the value of Pd = 7 PSI, we can measure a value equal to 4.02 mA at the channel output (as shown in the
image):

If the value of Pd = 5105 PSI, we can measure at the channel output a value equal to 17.61 mA (as shown in
the image):

not find it has communication with the sensor, it will restart and return to do it until you get the data.

• WDT2 Switch: Watch Dog Timer 2, helps maintain Modbus communications on the panel's slave port. This
function should only be on if we have the port in use. When the port is unoccupied or not in use, this function
should be turned off.

• Watch Dog Timer: This value is equal to 60 seconds by default and is the time (multiplied by a factor = 4) that
it will take the WDT to restart the unit if the data has been lost. So, if the value selected in this field is 60, the
unit reset time will be: 60 sec x 4 = 240 sec.

LED Indicators:

LED panel indicators show activity of the surface electronics communicating with the downhole gauge. These
indicators differ based on the surface unit configuration. The purpose of the indicators is to quickly diagnose
communication issues with the gauge.

Viewpoint Configuration

The Viewpoint gauge contains 3 panel indicators for the surface unit. They are in order of left to
right:

1) POWER LED – Displays power status to the unit (ON if working)

2) TOOL DATA LED – Displays communication status between the gauge and the unit. There
are 3 modes this LED will be in:
a. Blinking about once per second – This mode indicates the unit is attempting to
communicate with the gauge. This mode will occur on startup and continue until
either the gauge has begun communicating or the gauge cannot be found.
b. Blinking about twice per second – This mode indicates the unit cannot find the
gauge. Allow the unit to be in this mode for at least 2 minutes as it can sometimes
take longer for the unit to find the gauge.
c. Blinking about once per 7 seconds – This mode indicates the gauge is
communicating with the surface unit properly.
3) MODBUS LED – Displays status of communication between the processor and STU. When
the LED is ON, data is being transmitted from the STU to the processor.

SPT-X Configuration

The SPT-X gauge contains 4 panel indicators for the surface unit. They are in order of left to right:

1) HEATING – This indicates the heater inside the unit is enabled. This occurs automatically
below temperatures of -10C.
2) DHU – Indicator of communication with the downhole unit. This LED has three states:
a. RED – No communication with the gauge
b. YELLOW – Communication pending, unit searching for gauge.
c. GREEN – Gauge is communicating with the surface unit.
3) SwB – Indicator of communication between SPT-X electronics and surface unit. This indicator
is typically GREEN. If it is RED, there is a failure inside the surface unit.
4) POWER – Power indicator of the SPT-X electronics.
