Group 00 MID 210 Master ID General

General
Multiplexed electrical system
Volvo Busses has introduced an integrated multiplexed
electrical system consisting of a number of control units
that define the bus’s subsystems and functions. The
multiplexed electrical system consists of four data links:
bus A, bus B, bus C, and bus D. Bus A controls functions
that are part of the bus’s drive line, bus B handles body
functions, bus C handles chassis functions and bus D is
a communication link between bus C and B. A chassis
control unit (CECM-C) and a number of modules that
communicate via a CAN data link using the VOLCANO
standard (a CAN link unique to Volvo) is in addition
included in bus C. The same applies to bus B. The
chassis control unit and the other control units (bus A) T3016118
communicate with each other via two joint data links
SAE J1587/J1708 and SAE J1939. This exchange of
information via data links makes the system flexible and
modular.

Each module is positioned so that the distance to the

components it communicates with is as short as possible.
This makes it possible to reduce cable lengths between
modules and the components they control and monitor.

Master ID
The Master ID is a control unit with the main task of
supplying diagnostic and fault tracing information to
service personnel via a web interface. The user connects
up to a standard web based address from where the user
can trace faults on a bus. In addition to this function, the
Master ID has the task of receiving downloaded software
and sending it to the CECM-B that then forwards the
software to the correct BM (Body Module).

Design
Diagnostics and fault tracing are built up around the
Master ID. The connector pins on the control unit have
different electrical values. Using a PC, the user can, in
addition to diagnostics and fault tracing, read the signals’
values. Connect the PC’s RS232–cable to the Master
ID’s diagnostic connector as shown in the picture.

Group 00 MID 210 Master ID Specifications

Function
The Master ID functionality is to provide the mechanic
with diagnostic and fault tracing information. Via a www
address, the user can connect to a web application and
obtain the following information:

• Vehicle information.
• Fault log.
• Wiring diagram per control unit.
• ISaGRAF code.
• Wiring diagram per function.
• Parameter view.
• Software downloading.

Vehicle information
Information on what hardware and software is installed
on the bus. Connected modules are given with their part
numbers.

Fault log
This lists the faults and a short description of them, that
the bus has

Wiring diagram per control unit.

Each individual control unit is shown as a wiring diagram.
The control unit’s in and out signals are shown and some
more detailed information is available. For example, the
loads on the pins, in text form, around the control unit.

Wiring diagram per function.

This shows the functions downloaded to the bus and their
part numbers. The wiring diagram for functions is shown
with which pins and components are affected.

ISaGRAF code.
The function logic is displayed to the user as a logic chart.

Parameter vy.
A list of all and selectable parameters on the bus are
shown. The ability to make customer adjustments per
parameter are shown here.

Software download
This menu is used for software download. The user must
carry out an identification before downloading software to
a bus. The software is sourced form VBC Remote.

Group 00 MID 210 Master ID Malfunction

Malfunction
Master ID, fault tracing
Tracing faults that affect the Master ID are approached in
a different way than for other control units. There are no
fault codes in the Master ID, as there are for other control
units. The fault handling procedure is therefore as follows.
Where there is no contact with the Master ID:
1 This can be due to the connection via the modem
having been disconnected. Begin by reconnecting to
the master ID. If this does not work, shut down the
computer and restart. Also switch off the battery main
switch and switch on again. Connect up to the master
ID again. Continue in this way, each alternative tried
twice, before moving on to the next step.
2 Check whether there is any play between the
connectors and the control unit, or whether the
connector is damaged.

3 Input measurement. Measure the voltage to the

Master ID by using a breakout measurement. Check
the voltage, see table page 10.

4 Connect to the Master ID using Windows

HyperTerminal. This is the final step in determining
whether there is contact with the Master ID. To connect,
carry out the following:

Note: Turn the battery main switch off and let it remain
off until instructed to turn it back on.

• Start the Hyper Terminal (found in the Windows menu

accessories menu).

T3016595

• Select Icon.
• Enter a name for the call, for example Master ID.

7
Group 00 MID 210 Master ID Malfunction

T3016597

• Select connection type, direct to com 1.

T3016594

• Set the speed to 115200 and check that flow control is

set to hardware. Click on OK.

T3016596

• Turn on the battery main switch and if contact is

established with the master ID, information on the
connection will be shown in the window.

Note: After this step has been completed without any

connection being made, it can be assumed that the
control unit is dysfunctional.

Problems with software download

If contact with the Master ID is broken during new
software download, for example by a cable loosening
from the computer, the software package will lock up.
The procedure in this case is to re-establish contact with
VBC Remote and the control unit, and carry out a new
download of the same software whose download was
interrupted.

MID 210 Voltage measuring

Measurement at the control unit
Measurements at the control unit are checked by
connecting breakout box 9998699 and 9998596 at the
T0011163
control unit’s connector. Voltage and resistance can be
directly measured on the control unit’s pins.

Voltage measuring at the control unit

• The breakout box should be connected at the control

unit with the connector as shown in the picture.

• The starter switch should be in the drive position (II).

The check lists with specification of what the voltage

measurements should be for all direct measurements on
the control unit pins are given below.

MID 210 Resistance measuring

Resistance measuring at control unit
• The breakout box should be connected at the control
unit with the connector disconnected.

• The breakout box is connected to the component so

that the resistance in the component and the current T0011164
flow can be measured, see the picture.

• The starter switch should be in the stop position (0).

A check list with specification of what the resistance

measurements should be for all direct measurements on
the pins is given below.
