General
Instrumentation
The new Multiplex electrical system introduced by
Volvo Buses is based on a number of control units for
components and functions communicating with each
other via common data links. This makes the system
flexible and expandable.

The service information is intended to apply in general

for buses with instrument control units in the Multiplex
electrical system. This version is based on the B7L
and any unique information will be indicated. Service
information for other future bus models will be issued as a
supplement to this information. T0009008

Bus Instrument Cluster (BIC)

The instrument comprises three combined modules that
are designed to provide the driver will all the necessary
information concerning the bus as rapidly as possible.
The instrument control unit is located in the left-hand
module together with the display. Information from the
system’s different control units can be read off via the
expanded functionality offered in the instrument’s display.

In addition, there is a general description of the Multiplex

electrical system in Service Information group 30,
“Multiplex electrical system (BEA)”.

Design
The connector pins on the lighting control unit (LCM) have
differing electrical properties. The abbreviations used for
signal types are described below.

HDI High Digital Input

LDI Low Digital Input

GDI General Digital Input (HDI/LDI,

selectable)

RES Resistance

The signal types HDI, LDI, HDO and LDO have different
logic levels and structures in the control unit. The signals
have therefore different properties, see table. Note
that the limits for the different signal characteristics are
programmable and can therefore differ slightly between
the different pins. Signal types AO, AI and PWM have
fully individual programmable properties and will therefore
not be covered in detail here.

DI H = Digital signal with high activation.

If the voltage is >7.7 V the control unit interprets the
signal as active, and if the voltage is <3.5 V the signal
is interpreted as inactive.

DI L = Digital signal with low activation.

If the voltage is <3.5 V, the control unit interprets the
signal as active, and if the voltage is >7.7 V the signal
is interpreted as inactive.

Function
Instrument control unit, functions
The following functions are handled by the instrument
control unit.

Display
The display is standard equipment in all versions of the
instrument. The functions can be divided into two groups:

• Preselected information, where the driver via various

menus can choose which parts of the available T3008860 T3008861
information are to be shown on the display.

• Automatically activated information, which is shown

when a fault occurs.

Under the display are two lamps, one yellow (info) and
one red (stop). At the same time as an automatically
activated message is shown on the display, one of the
two lamps lights up. Which of the lamps that lights up
depends on how serious the fault is.

The information that is available for the driver appears

in two different ways, depending on whether the vehicle
is being driven or is stationary. In the menus that are
available while driving, a number of symbols are also
shown in special fields on the display.

Boost pressure gauge

The gauge measures overpressure in the intake manifold.
When driving with constant load, the pointer should
be stationary. Besides showing the level of boost
pressure, the boost pressure gauge is used together with
the speedometer to help the driver maintain an even
speed and constant throttle, thereby minimising fuel
consumption.

T3009977

Coolant temperature gauge, engine

The gauge indicates the temperature of the engine
cooling system. The temperature should normally lie
below the red zone. The gauge gives a reading when
the ignition key is in the drive position and the coolant
temperature exceeds 60 C.

The LED in the bottom right-hand corner will come on

when the engine control unit sends a signal concerning
high coolant temperature, irrespective of the gauge
reading.

T3009973

8
Group 381 Instrument control unit (BIC) Design and Function

Oil pressure gauge, engine

The gauge shows the current oil pressure in the engine.
The pointer must not enter the red zone while driving!
The engine can be seriously damaged if oil pressure is
lost, e.g. due to an oil leak. The gauge gives a reading
when the ignition key is in the drive position.

The LED in the bottom right-hand corner will come on

when the engine control unit sends a signal concerning
low oil pressure, irrespective of the gauge reading.

T3009976

Fuel level gauge

The gauge shows the approximate amount of fuel in the
tank. The red sector indicates that it is time to refuel. The
gauge gives a reading when the ignition key is in the drive
position and the fuel tank is not empty.

The LED in the bottom right-hand corner will come on

when the chassis control unit sends a signal saying the
fuel level is less than 15% of full volume, irrespective of
the gauge reading.

T3006718

Air pressure gauge, front brake circuit

The gauge shows the air pressure in the front brake
circuit. The bus must not be driven when the pointer is in
the red zone, 0 — 5.2 bar.

T3014457

9
Group 381 Instrument control unit (BIC) Design and Function

Air pressure gauge, driving axle brake circuit

The gauge shows the air pressure in the drive axle circuit.
The bus must not be driven when the pointer is in the red
zone, 0 — 5.2 bar.

T3014458

Air pressure gauge, intermediate axle brake circuit

The gauge shows the air pressure in the intermediate
axle brake circuit. The bus must not be driven when the
pointer is in the red zone, 0 — 5.2 bar.

List of parameters
The following table lists all the available customer and
vehicle parameters. A link to Volvo (VDA) is required
in order to program the vehicle parameters. This
is indicated with a connection symbol in the far left
column. Vehicle parameters are either accessories or
functions determined by legal requirements. Customer
parameters, on the other hand, can be programmed
without connecting to VDA.

The list will be updated with service bulletins as new

functions are introduced service bulletins.

Explanation of fault code table

For each fault code, there are three tables and one
illustration that give general information on the fault code
and describe suitable measurements that should be taken
to localise the source of the fault.

First table, general information

Engine type: Specifies engine type on which the current fault code is implemented.
Component number: Number of the component whose subsystem causes the fault code.
Wiring diagram: Designation of relevant wiring diagrams in the service handbook for
the electrical system of the bus model in question and (in brackets) the
designation of the wiring diagram in service literature for previous electrical
architectures.
General Symptoms which occur for all types of faults (FMI) with that fault code.
fault symptoms:
Appropriate test Test in VCADS Pro that can be used for further investigation of the
in VCADS Pro: component.
Status test Specifies whether there is a relevant status test for the component which can
in BIC: be carried out directly in the instrument control unit display.
Adapter on Instructions on which adapter to use on the component connector while
component: taking measurements.
Adapter on Instructions on which type of adapter to use on the control unit connector
control unit: while taking measurements.
Illustration: Schematic illustration of the component subsystem. Relevant pins on the
control unit and measurement points on the component are shown in the
illustration.

Second table, information on fault types

Type of fault: Specifies the fault types (FMI) that can occur for that fault code.
Symptom: Describes which fault symptoms occur for the various fault types.
Possible cause: Indicates the faults which can be the cause of the fault code for a fault type.

Third table, measurements

Measurement: Indicates the part the measurement is intended to check.
Measurement method: The illustrations specify whether:

• the control unit connector should be connected or disconnected

• the component connector should be connected or disconnected

• the adapter should be connected to the component or to the control unit.

Key position: Shows whether the starter switch/power supply switch should be in the stop
position (0) or drive position (II).
Measurement points: Describes which pins on the control unit (socket in the adapter box) or
measurement points on the component, where the measurement should be
carried out.
Expected value: Indicates with 20 % accuracy the values the measurement should give if
the part (component) is functioning normally. Also shows whether voltage
or resistance should be measured.
Miscellaneous: Special conditions or prerequisites for correct measurements.
