including how to behave and what to think of a stranger so we
can predict that stranger’s behavior.
Socio-cultural Communication as symbolic process in (re)production of social order. ▪ Groupthink Theory – This theory tries to predict the decision-

▪ Relational Dialectics Theory – This theory is about the
contradictions in relationship, how we can understand each
individuals’ perceptions regarding relational dialectics and the
reasons behind their decision to handle them in a certain way.
Critical Discursive reflection. ▪ Cultural Studies Theory – This theory focuses on how
▪ Frankfurt School individuals interpret what the media wants them to do, how it
▪ Discourse affects the masses and how to regulate its influence between the
▪ Ideology elite and the ordinary people.

▪ Standpoint Theory – This theory attempts to comprehend each


person's perspective on the communication in light of their own
life experiences or standpoint. It also explains how a person’s
position in a conversation may influence the interaction itself.

Rhetorical Communication as art of public speaking. ▪ Dramatism – This theory aims to identify the driving factors
▪ Rhetoric behind an audience behavior or action.
▪ Influence through verbal and non-verbal communication
▪ Narrative Paradigm Theory – Is a theory that seeks to
understand how each individuals decides whether or not to trust
and believe the story they are told.
Phenomenological Communication as experience of self and others through dialogue. ▪ Symbolic Interaction Theory – This theory holds that humans
▪ Standpoint and perceptions exist in both the natural and symbolic environment. Wherein it
▪ Interaction explains how each individuals interprets the symbols they use
▪ Questioning semiotics and rhetoric and how that interpreted meaning influences the way they do.

▪ Social Exchange Theory – According to the social exchange


theory, society may be viewed as a set of interpersonal
interactions based on expectations of rewards and penalties. In
which this theory identifies the key factors in interpersonal
relationships that contribute and make them beneficial to both
parties.
Semiotic Communication as sharing meaning through system of signs.

▪ (Re)presentation and transmission of meaning communication by identifying people who have it and those who
don't.

▪ Genderlect Theory – This theory states that men and women


will communicate differently depending on how their gender is
expected to do so.

General Insight
Communication Theory has garnered numerous citations in academic works and made a lot of contributions to it. In relation, communication itself being a process implies
that it’s continuous. In fact, communication is a broad field that draws from many disciplines wherein theories may explain further. This means that learning and understanding how
communication happens is never-ending and has a very wide scope. Take for example Robert Craig’s seven traditions of communication which are known as the Cybernetic, Socio-
psychological, Socio-cultural, Critical, Rhetorical, Phenomenological and Semiotic. These traditions highlight various aspects or specialized area of communication which helps us
better understand conflicting viewpoints and how can we relate them in real life situations. Therefore, with the help of such tradition’s development communication performing its
task to use communication in promoting social development will be a great of help to devcom practitioners like me in the future. This is because our line of work is in the field of
communication, these principles will be helpful in doing our jobs right since we face different types of people that has various perspectives, beliefs and cultural background. And so,
such traditions of communication theory in the practice of development communication discipline opens up great opportunities.
