Chapter 4: What They Saw Through the Window

1. sort (n): A group of things that are of the same type or that share similar qualities. Approximately, roughly.
This sort of music is really bad.
2. clearing (n): An area in a wood or forest from which trees and bushes have been removed.

3. start off (v): To begin in a particular way.
The game has started off over 10 minutes.
4. beneath (prep): In or to a lower position than someone or something, under someone or something
The rock sunk to the sand beneath.
5. tend (v): To be likely to behave in a particular way or have a particular characteristic.
I tend to do laundry on the weekend.
6. misty (adj): If the weather is misty, there is mist in the air that makes it difficult to see into the distance.

7. moor (n): An open area of hills covered with rough grass, especially in Britain.

8. bench (n): A long, usually hard seat for two or more people, often found in public places.

10. wire (n): A piece of thin metal thread that can be bent, used for fastening things and for making particular types
of objects that are strong but can bend.
My house is full of wires outside.

11. fence (n): A structure that divides two areas of land, similar to a wall but made of wood or wire and supported with
posts.
The house was surrounded by a tall, wooden fence.

12. telegraph pole (n): A tall wooden pole to which phone wires are fixed.
To announce to the public that a town would be located here, a tin pan was placed on top of a telegraph pole.

13. bale (n): A large amount of something such as hay, paper, wool, or cloth that has been tied tightly together.
She used a bale of cotton.
14. spike (n): A narrow, thin shape with a sharp point at one end, or something, especially a piece

18. chain gang (n): A group of prisoners who have to work outdoors outside the prison while tied together with
chains.
He was imprisoned and forced to work on a chain gang.
19. wheelbarrow (n): A large, open container for moving things in with a wheel at the front and two handles at the
back, used especially in the garden.

20. crutch (n): A stick with a handle and a part that fits around your lower arm, or a stick with piece that fits under the
arm, that you lean on for support if you have difficulty in walking because of a foot or leg injury.
She broke her arm and has been on crutches for the past six weeks.

21. huddle (v): To come close together in a group, for example because it is cold.
It was so cold that we huddled together for warmth.
