IV.PROCEDURES/PAMAMARAAN
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
Show a pictures below and identify the different patterns on each picture. Discuss these with a partner and see whether
you observe the same pattern.
Discuss common monomial factor
Begin with review of finding factors of numbers such as 8, 12, 16, 24
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson
Now have students find common factors among numbers, for example:
“What are the common factors of 8 and 12?

“What are the common factors of 16 and 24?

C. Presenting examples/Instances of the new lesson

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 1

Examples for each of the instructional strategies listed above
1. Factors of 8, 12, 16, 24, and 36
(1, 2, 4, 8), (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12), (1, 2, 4, 8, 16), (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24),
(1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36)

2. Common factors of:

8 and 12 16 and 24 16 and 36
1, 2, and 4 1, 2, 4, and 8 1, 2, and 4

3. Greatest Common Factor

8 and 12 16 and 24 16 and 36
4 8 4
4. Factoring monomials

5. Find the greatest common factors of and

The common factors are so the greatest common factor is

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 2

Discuss the common monomial factor.
F. Developing mastery(leads to Formative Assessment 3)
3(2x+y) = 6x +3y
G. Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson
Explain to students that we have been working with the properties of multiplication and exponents in a new
context. These properties continue to govern our actions as we look for the common monomial factor of
polynomials. They should be looking for those properties in their work.

I. Evaluating learning
Factoring Common Monomial Factor (CMF)
Find the factors of each expression.

IV.PROCEDURES/PAMAMARAAN
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
As a review on basic concepts of factoring, allow the students to give the different dimensions of rectangle they
can create out of a square whose area is 36 units squared (e.g. 18 and 2, 9 and 4), with this they will realize that
the different factors of 36 are the dimensions of rectangle. Ask the topical question to the students and the
essential question.
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson
C. Presenting examples/Instances of the new lesson
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 1
Start the discussion by defining factoring, you can use the questions found in learning modules.
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 2
The above activity gave us the idea about the Greatest Common Monomial Factor that appears in every term of
the polynomial. Study the illustrative examples on how factoring the Greatest Common Monomial Factor is
being done.
Factor 12x3y5 – 20x5y2z
a. Find the greatest common factor of the numerical coefficients. The GCF of 12 and 20 is 4.
b. Find the variable with the least exponent that appears in each term of the polynomial. x and y are both
common to all terms and 3 is the smallest exponent for x and 2 is the smallest exponent of y, thus, x3y2 is the
GCF of the variables.
c. The product of the greatest common factor in (a) and (b) is the GCF of the polynomial. Hence, 4x3y2 is the
GCF of 12x3y5 – 20x5y2z.
d. To completely factor the given polynomial, divide the polynomial by its GCF, the resulting quotient is the
other factor.
F. Developing mastery(leads to Formative Assessment 3)
G. Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

For you to have a better understanding about this lesson, observe how the expressions below are factored
and observe the relationships of the term with each other.
a. x2 – y2 = (x + y)(x – y) b. 4x2 – 36 = (2x + 6)(2x – 6) c. a2b4 – 81 = (ab2 – 9)(ab2 + 9)
d. 16a6 – 25b2 = (4a3 – 5b)(4a3 + 5b) e. ( 9 16 r4 – 1 25 t2 n6 ) = ( 3 4 r2 + 1 5 tn3)( 34r2 – 1 5tn3)
