Activity # 2
Explain the four (4) ethical standards in academic debate and discuss how these standards are to
be observed or practiced in actual debate settings.

A. The importance of competition must be kept in perspective- Competition should be

viewed as a way to achieving more significant educational goals. Student debaters work
hard and immerse themselves in their debate preparation because they are driven to
compete effectively and they gain greatly from this level of commitment in terms of
fulfilling educational goals and skill development. Healthy competition motivates children
to strive for excellence rather than mediocrity. Students who compete become more
curious, conduct independent research, and learn to collaborate with others. They will
endeavor to go above and beyond the call of duty. These skills prepare youngsters for a
variety of future circumstances. Whether they're applying to college, seeking a promotion,
or searching for a cancer treatment, the capacity to compete will offer them a significant
advantage.

B. Honesty and integrity should be maintained at the highest levels- It is critical to exercise
the greatest levels of honesty when evaluating evidence and reasoning. Because we can’t
truly make progress through debate and discourse if we’re not all behaving with high
standards of honesty and integrity.

C. All participants should treat each other with respect- Arguments should only be focused
against the opponent's arguments and support, not at individuals or groups of people.
This can include things like appropriate language, nonverbal messaging, and even
argumentative strategy. The idea is to respect each other's right to rhetorical space while
encouraging free discussion. Because contempt may be transmitted in subtle and
inadvertent ways, doing so may need reflection.

D. Evidence standards require complete source citations and verbatim quotation-
