UNIT 1, ACTIVITY # 2

Analyze the following paragraph and identify whether or not it is an argument. Explain what
makes it or not an argument.

"We must condemn the labeling of LGBTQIA+ in our community as animals. Members of the
LGBTQIA+ community are also human beings and citizens of this country. They are like the rest
of us endowed with rights and protected by our laws. They existed the way we exist through
natural conception and birth. They were educated the way we were, loved the way we were,
nurtured the way we were, etc. This labeling act is not democracy and it will never be. LGBTQIA+
are also people by which sovereignty resides and government authority emanates. They formed
part of this democratic society, and their existence, though a minority, will serve its purpose in
understanding the essence of being a democracy, of being unique and in remaining different. If
we allow this labeling act to continue, we may as well become a fascist Hitler in modern times."

This paragraph is an argument. It starts with the main claim or idea of the
paragraph. It states reasons why we should disagree calling LGBTQIA+ as animals. It
gives others good reasons to believe that what the writer asserting is true rather
than make believe. It is reinforced with solid reasoning. The writer attempts to
persuade readers to understand and support their point of view regarding the
labelling of LGBTQIA+ as animals by stating their reasoning to back it up. In this way,
the readers’ trust are gained.
