HOW TO USE THIS DIGITIZED LEARNING MODULE

Welcome to the module in Media and Information Literacy. This module contains
training materials and activities for you to complete this module.

Distance students will be graded on their participation based on posts after each
class to the course blog. Generally, writing a paragraph that either poses some
questions, makes a comment on the lecture or class discussion, or otherwise
demonstrates that you have thought about the material discussed is sufficient

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete

each learning outcome of the module. Each of the learning outcomes is provided with
Modules. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of
each learning outcome.

Talk to your online facilitator and agree on how you will both organize the Training
of this unit. Read each through the module carefully. It is divided into sections, which
cover all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete this module.

 Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section.
Read Modules and complete self-check. Suggested references are included to
supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Most probably your facilitator will be your supervisor or manager. Your online
facilitator will support and correct you.
 Your online facilitator will tell you about the important things you need consider
when you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and take
notes.
 You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice on the job.
Make sure you practice new skills during regular work shifts. This way you will
improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
 Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.
 Kindly the self-check questions at the LMS (EDMODO) to test your own progress.
 When you are ready, ask your online facilitator to watch you online via Zoom or
Google Meet to perform the activities outlined in this module.
 Ask your online facilitator work through the activities: ask for written feedback
on your progress. Your online facilitator keeps feedback/pre-assessment reports

Media then and Now

Learning Objective: After reading this MODULE, you should be

able to:
1. Examine the technology or resources available during the prehistoric
age, the industrial age, the electronic age, and the new or digital age

2. Identify the devices used by people to communicate with each other,

store information, and broadcast information across the different ages.

Brief History of Media

Ever since the human being evolved on planet Earth, communicating with each
other was one of the most essential and immediate needs that they had to learn,
develop, and master. This is to convey information they want to share and get
information they also need. And however there’s a need for information and
communication, we now know that certain kinds of media should also be in present in
order to help facilitate this basic human need.
All things on the earth had a process of evolution; Nothing is also created or
manufactured at random, for each and every creation was borne out of a need to fill a
gap to improve on a existing condition.
Such is the case of media. The gadget you are holding in your hand might not be
there had it been for the entrepreneurial, artistic, mathematic or scientific acumen of
certain individuals who aimed to served humanity own unique and humble way.
Every new thing has a beginning. It is always important to look back at history in
order to understand how things work in the present. This is needed in order for us to
look at what is yet to come in the future.

4.1 Pre-Industrial Age Before(1700s)

People discovered fire, developed paper from plants, and forged weapons and
tools with stone, bronze, copper and iron.

Pre-industrial society refers to social attributes and forms of political and

1. Cave Painting (35,000 BC)

The minimum age for (the outline of the hand) is

39,900 years old, which makes it the oldest hand
stencil in the world,” said Dr Aubert.

There are also paintings in the caves that

are around 27,000 years old, which means that the
inhabitants were painting for at least 13,000 years.

In addition, there are paintings in a cave in

the regency of Bone, 100 km north of Maros.
These cannot be dated because the stalactite-like
growths used to determine the age of the art do
not occur.

The discovery of the Indonesian cave art is important because it shows the
beginnings of human intelligence as we understand it today.

2. Clay Tablet In Mesopotamia

In the Ancient Near East, clay tablets Akkadian

ṭuppu were used as a writing medium, especially for
writing in cuneiform, throughout the Bronze Age and well
into the Iron Age. Cuneiform characters were imprinted on
a wet clay tablet with a stylus often made of reed (reed
pen).

3. Papyrus in Egypt (2500 BC)

Papyrus is a plant (cyperus papyrus) which once grew in abundance, primarily in

the wilds of the Egyptian Delta but also elsewhere in the Nile River Valley, but is now
quite rare.

4. Acta Diurna In Rome

The first form of Acta appeared around 131 BC during the Roman Republic. Their
original content included results of legal proceedings and outcomes of trials.
Sometimes scribes made copies of the Acta and sent them to governors for
information. The Acta, originally kept secret, until
then-consul Julius Caesar made them public in 59
BC. Later rulers, however, often censored them.
Publication of the Acta Diurna stopped when the
seat of the emperor was moved to Constantinople.

The Acta Diurna to some extent filled the

place of the modern newspaper and of
the government gazette.

5. Dibao in China (2nd Century)

Dibao literally “reports from

the residences”, were a type of
publications issued by central and
local governments in imperial China.
While closest in form and function
to gazettes in the Western world,
they have also been called “palace
reports” or “imperial bulletins”.
Selected items from a gazette might
then be conveyed to local citizenry
by word of mouth and/or posted
announcements. Frequency of
publication varied widely over time
and place. The gazettes from
Beijing at this time were known
as Jingbao, literally “reports from the capital”.

6. Codex in the Mayan Region (5th Century)

The Grolier Codex, an ancient document that is among the rarest books in the
world, has been regarded with skepticism since it was
reportedly unearthed by looters from a cave in
Chiapas, Mexico, in the 1960s.

But a meticulous
new study of the codex
has yielded a startling
conclusion: The codex is
both genuine and likely
the most ancient of all
surviving manuscripts
from ancient America.

They reviewed “all known research on the

manuscript,” analyzing it “without regard to the politics,
academic and otherwise, that have enveloped the Grolier,”
the team wrote in its study “The Fourth Maya Codex.”

the publication and includes a lavish facsimile of the codex.

It was found in a cave in Mexico, and a wealthy Mexican collector, Josué Sáenz,
had sent it abroad before its eventual return to the Mexican authorities.”

7. Printing Press Using Wood Blocks

Woodblock printing is a technique

for printing text, images or patterns used widely
throughout East Asia and originating in China in
antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and
later paper. As a method of printing on cloth,
the earliest surviving examples from China date
to before 220 AD, and woodblock printing
remained the most common East Asian method
of printing books and other texts, as well as
images, until the 19th century. Ukiyo-e is the
best known type of Japanese woodblock art
print. Most European uses of the technique for
printing images on paper are covered by the art
term woodcut, except for the block-books produced mainly in the 15th century.

4.2 Industrial Revolution

The term Industrial Revolution, like

similar historical concepts, is more
convenient than precise. It is convenient
because history requires division into
periods for purposes of understanding and
instruction and because there were
sufficient innovations at the turn of the
18th and 19th centuries to justify the
choice of this as one of the periods. The
term is imprecise, however, because the
Industrial Revolution has no clearly defined
beginning or end. Moreover, it is
misleading if it carries the implication of a
once-for-all change from a “preindustrial”
to a “postindustrial” society, because, as has been seen, the events of the traditional
Industrial Revolution had been well prepared in a mounting tempo of industrial,

acceleration of the processes of industrialization that is still proceeding in our own time.
The term Industrial Revolution must thus be employed with some care. It is used below
to describe an extraordinary quickening in the rate of growth and change and, more
particularly, to describe the first 150 years of this period of time, as it will be convenient
to pursue the developments of the 20th century separately.
People used the power of steam, developed machine tools, established iron
production, and the manufacturing of various products (including books through the
printing press).

1. Newspaper- the London Gazette

With the plague abating in the capital, and Charles II and his court back in
London, The London Gazette is born, as issue 24. It became the only published
newspaper, all others being suppressed.
This day his Majesty, with his Royal Highness, arrived in perfect health from
Hampton-Court, at His Palace at White-Hall, to the infinite Joy of this City, which
they endeavoured to manifest, by Bells and Bonfires, and such other expressions of
publick rejoicing… for the return of a Blessing they had to long wished for’
2. Typewriter

Christopher Latham invented typewriter in

1867 typewriter helped people to type faster
easier, typewriter also let to computer.
Typewriter also helped us save time by not
getting your hand really tired, when you type you
get less plane they hand writing with ink.

3. Telephone

During the 1970s two

independent inventors, Alexander Bell
and Elisha Grey, invented devices that
could transmit sound electronically.
Bell patented his invention first, but
the battle between inventors
continued. However, Bell eventually
won this battle. Since Bell knew a lot
about music and the telegraph, which
had been in use for about 30 year, it
helped him to create the telephone.
Bell soon discovered how to send
multiple messages in the telegraph
and called it the "multiple telegraph."
He got help from an electrician named
Thomas Watson. Eventually, on June
2, 1875 Bell discovered that he could
hear sound over a wire.

4. Motion picture Photograph/projection

Moving pictures. Pictures that movied. From the 1850s on, there had been
experimentation by photographers and others in reproducing human motion. First short
motion pictures arrived in the 1890s.

There was no sound, usually no

plot and no story. Just movement. One
of the earliest movie shorts was a
collection of 15-30 second scenarios.

The first movie "shows," which

lasted 5-8 minutes, were a collection of
these short scenes: a train arriving at a
station, a man watering his garden,
men playing cards, people getting off of
a ferry boat and a street vendor selling
his wares.

5. Telegraph

The idea behind the telegraph - sending electric signals across wires - originated
in the early 1700s. New York University professor Samuel Morse began working on his
version of the telegraph in 1832; he developed Morse Code (a set of sounds that
corresponded to particular letters of the alphabet), in 1835

6.Punch Car

Punch cards (or "punched

cards"), also known as Hollerith
cards or IBM cards, are paper cards
where holes may be punched by
hand or machine to represent
computer data and instructions. They
were a widely-used means
of inputting data into early
computers. The cards were fed into a
card reader connected to a computer,
which converted the sequence of
holes to digital information.

4.3 Electronic Age(1930s-1980)

The invention of the transistor ushered in the electronic age. People harnessed
the power of transistors that led to the transistor radio, electronic circuits and the early
computers. In this age, long distance communication became more efficient.

1. Transistor Radio

Transistors work primarily as switches and

amplifiers. Given those functions, it's no surprise
that sound-related devices were the first
commercial products to use transistors. In 1952,
transistorized hearing aids hit the market.
The function of transistors in radios is
straightforward. Sounds are recorded through a
microphone and turned into electrical signals.
Those signals travel through a circuit, and the
transistor amplifies the signal, which is
subsequently much louder when it reaches a
speaker.
2. Television

Television (TV),
the electronic delivery of moving images
and sound from a source to a receiver.
By extending the senses of vision and
hearing beyond the limits of physical
distance, television has had a
considerable influence on society.
Television is now delivered in a
variety of ways: “over the air” by
terrestrial radio waves (traditional
broadcast TV); along coaxial cables (cable TV); reflected off of satellites held in
geostationary Earth orbit (direct broadcast satellite, or DBS, TV).

3. Large Electronic Computers

Electronic Numerical Integrator and
Computer, the ENIAC was the first electronic
computer used for general purposes, such as
solving numerical problems. It was invented
by John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly.

4. Mainframe Computers

Mainframes are a type of computer that generally are known for their large size,
amount of storage, processing power and high level of reliability. They are primarily
used by large organizations for mission-critical applications requiring high volumes of
data processing.

5. Personal Computer
PC is short
for personal computer or IBM PC.
The first personal computer
produced by IBM was called the PC,
and increasingly the term PC came
to mean IBM or IBM-compatible
personal computers,
A personal computer (PC) ma
y also refer to any small, relatively
inexpensive computer designed for
an individual use.

In 1976 Apple co-founders Steve

Wozniak and Steve Jobs sold their first pre-
assembled computer, called the Apple-1.
It could be used for developing
programs, playing games or running the BASIC
operating system.

4.4 Information Age (1900s-2000s)

The Internet paved the way for faster communication and the creation of the
social network. People advanced the use of microelectronics with the invention of
personal computers, mobile devices, and wearable technology. Moreover, voice, image,
sound and data are digitalized. We are now living in the information age.

The modern age regarded as a time in which information has become a

commodity that is quickly and widely disseminated and easily available especially
through the use of computer technology.
