PLAN OF INVESTIGATION

The topic “Cyberbullying” is of interest to me because there are many

individuals such as friends and family who are victims of cyberbullying. This research
will give me more information on cyberbullying and how to avoid it. As an English
Language Student, I can enhance my ability to use Standard English structures,
improve comprehension skills and my ability to edit. I plan to search for a newspaper
article, magazine article and a short story, using the internet and library texts. I expect
to use skills of analysing writer’s techniques in selected materials by means of
discussion with my group.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON CYBERBULLYING

Cyberbullying a serious problem

THE EDITOR :  Bullying among children is not something new t o schools in TT. It
has always been around. What is changing is the nature of bullying.

Cyberbullying is a newer form of bullying. It involves making use of the internet to

attack, threaten and spread false rumours about people. As more children spend more
time online and texting, instead of going outside to play sports, some of them are
taking their conflicts online.

In the past bullies used playing fields and schools to prey on the ir victims. The
internet has made the playing field a whole lot bigger.

Cyberbullying incidents include exposure to sexual remarks, unflatte ring and

suggestive personal photos spread online, and being bullied, r ecorded and
 photos/videos distributed online.

Cyberbullying makes it easier for children to mask their true identities. So, bullies are
not necessarily physically imposing. Sometimes they are just children filled with
hatred.

Some bullies are seeking a wider audience and may even go so far as to c apt ure
physical attacks on video and post them onl ine for others to view.

Bullying should be taken more seriously in TT. Children who experience bullying can
feel all alone and become emotionally traumatised, leaving long-lasting scars.

Children feel extremely confused about how to deal with such situations. Adults must
partner with children to assist them in the creation of a social net work that will
support them. It is time to take cyberbullying seriously in TT.

SHORT STORY ON CYBER BULLYING

My technological obsession began in fifth grade when I received my first phone. It

was a purple flip phone, the fancy kind with a sliding keyboard. As an eleven-year-old, that
phone was my life and key to maturity, responsibility and superiority compared to every
unfortunate, phoneless soul. A couple years later, I upgraded from my beloved flip phone to
an iPhone 4, a colossal step from no internet access to the entire web at my naive fingertips. I
discovered social media, downloaded the most stereotypical games (I’m talking Fruit Ninja),
and spent hours messaging my school friends and new ones I’d meet through various apps.
Of course, I knew the dangers the internet held, how you could be bullied, catfished or have
your personal information leaked. Teachers, parents, and internet-weary friend had drilled the
dangers of the internet into my head. None of that bothered me; I had a device that gave me
so much independence without having to leave my room! Having a phone and gaining that
sense of being an adult was the best feeling in the world, but that soon changed. As I spent
more and more time online, I eventually met a guy named “Josh”. We liked the same books
and had mutual online friends, so of course we started talking. We went from enthusiastically
discussing our favourite characters to me begging him to talk. From messaging him maybe
once or twice a day, to making up stories about how I was depressed just to make him talk to
me. He came between my friends and me; we were obsessing over getting his attention, even
fighting over it with all-caps yelling matches. I remember not talking to some of my closest
friends for days because they had taken his attention away from me. It took months for us to
realize that Josh was not worth losing our friendships over, that he had manipulated us into
hating each other, practically bullying each other in efforts to get closer to him. We blocked
him and started rebuilding the connections we had damaged so badly. That was when Josh
messaged us all and revealed that he was actually a girl our age named “Sarah”, who had
pretended to be Josh in order to get into our inner circle. We had all been catfished and it was
a shock for everybody. After everything that happened, I finally saw how the internet and
social media had changed me for the worse. It had taken up the majority of my time and
turned me from a caring friend to a horrible one. I decided to reduce the time I spent online
and be more cautious about who I talked to. Cyberbullying is a scary part of internet culture
that affects one fifth of all Canadian teens. It happened to my friends and me, people I never
thought I would hurt or that would hurt me. I think we all need to learn to manage the
freedom of the internet and the consequences of having an online presence.

R EFLECTION 1

The newspaper article showed me that cyberbullying is not being taken seriously in
Trinidad and Tobago. Some people, mostly teens use the internet to bully others and lower
their self-esteem by posting or spreading negative rumours on their social media platforms.
This made me realise that being on social media can put you in a lot of bad situations and it
can harm people.
The second piece I found showed me the truth about cyberbullying. Teens are mostly
the victims or suspects in the activity, they are also the most-unkind on social media sites.
Most common types are hurtful comments and false rumours. This taught me not to bully
others because you may not know how bad it can affect them.
The final piece showed me that anyone can be catfished by someone else just for them
to fit in. this can turn you against your friend who is also being catfished. This made me
realise not to trust anyone who I don’t know.

R EFLECTION 2

I identified some contrast in the use of language I my materials. Firstly, every piece
conveys a different tone. The tone in the newspaper is very concerning. This is seen in
sentences such as “Cyber bullying is a newer form of bullying” (line 4), the words, “threaten
and spread rumours (line 5) conveys the seriousness of the issue. Th sentence “Cyber
bullying makes it easier or children to mask their true identities” (line 14) is also very
concerning.
The tone in the magazine article is also one of concern. The use of statistics, “One
million children were victims of cyber bullying in 2011” adds strength to the article.
The tone of the author in the story conveys the protagonist’s jealousy. This is seen in
the sentence, “I remember not talking to some of my closest friends for days because they
had taken his attention away from me.” (line 24-26). The use of the first person narrator
conveys the true feelings of the narrator.

R EFLECTION 3

This English SBA made me realise that group work is not an easy task. I developed a
lot of patience and understanding working with the members of the group. It also helped me
to appreciate what is required too successfully work in a group. It even helped me to listen to
my group members’ opinions in a respectful manner.
As an English Language Student, this SBA helped me to improve my ability to scan
for ideas. It also helped me widen my vocabulary through the reading of the materials. It
taught me how to access the quality and accuracy of information from online and from other
resources.
Personally, this SBA helped me to think about social issues in the Caribbean. It
helped develop in me an appreciation for reading. I became confident in myself when I
presented as I was never a big fan of presenting in front of people, but this SBA helped me
overcome my fears.

ORAL PRESENTATION

My Group’s theme is based on Social Media, and my topic is Cyber bullying. My oral
presentation is about Cyber bullying, what it is, how it affects the youths, why do some
people bully others and what can we do to prevent it.

Many people may have been bullied online. It is said that eighty percent of the
population are victims of Cyber bullying and the next twenty percent are suspects. Just in
case you didn’t know much about Cyber bullying you’re going to learn about it today.

So, what is Cyber bullying? According to websters Cyber bullying is a form of

bullying or harassment by using electronic devices, it is also known as online bullying. Cyber
bullying has become a very common action among teens. This is when teens go on their
Social Media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, to bully others. Some of
these actions are posting rumours, threats, sexual remarks, spreading victim’s personal
information and also labelling others.

How does Cyber bullying affect the young teens? Most teens experience anger,
humiliation, depression, isolation, disinterest in school or even life. One reason for this are
remarks such as, “She very ugly”, “I don’t know why she feel she better than everybody”
“She need to organize that weight”, might make the victims feel as if they did something
wrong.

Why do some people bully others online? Some victims who have been bullied
already, may seek revenge instead of dealing with it in a mature way. Some may think others
deserve it. Some may be bored and looking for entertainment. But none of these examples are
excuses for bullying others.

In order for us to stop or prevent Cyber bullying we need to come together. So, I pose
the question to you. What can we do to prevent Cyber bullying? Don’t respond. Sometimes a
reaction is what the suspect is looking for because it may give them the power to bully you
even more. Save the hurtful remarks people are saying and show it someone who can help
you, it can be a teacher, an adult or a friend. Tell the person to stop, you don’t have to if you
don’t want to, but when you are comfortable to do so, make it clear that you won’t  be treated
like that.

If someone you know is being bullied , take action, don’t let them get treated that way.
If you can’t stop it, be there for them, listen to what they have to say and see if you can help
in any way, or reach out to an adult, teacher or even a Cyber bullying campaign online to get
necessary help. Bully is never the right answer. Sop the bullying while you can.

GROUP WRITTEN R EPORT

In the Caribbean social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture and
especially our youths. The negativity of social media continues to spread in schools in the
Caribbean. As a group, we wanted to see how negatively social media affected teens. As a
result, we searched for pieces form different genres that dealt with the negative impact of
social media. The sub-topics were; Cyberbullying, the effects of social media on mental
health and social media and its effect on society. Each member was assigned roles like,
leader, editor, reporter and recorder.

From the nine pieces collected by our group, we selected, the articles on “Social
media and body image” and “Cyberbullying”. As well as the graphic based on the impact of
social media on youths’ mental health. We selected these three pieces because they all
describes the dangers and also the positive effects of using social media.

The newspaper article on “Cyberbullying” shone light on the issue in TT. It also
emphasised that cyberbullying made children f eel inferior. The “Ranking of social media
platforms” survey indicated that Instagram is the most negative social media platform. It
causes feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Lastly, the magazine article “Social media make me
feel ugly” highlighted the negative experiences some people may have with social media
such as the reality of danger of cyberbullying that impacts on someone’s mental health.

Our group had to overcome many challenges due to some members being absent or
breaking class. However, we overcame said obstacles with keeping regular group meetings
during the break periods. Doing this we developed a positive attitude towards teamwork and
also learnt time management.
