Magnetic circuit and Transformers Assignment 1 (Due 16th May 2022)

1. A conductor of 5 m long carrying a current of 200 A is placed in a magnetic field where

density is 0.5 T. Calculate the force on the conductor if it is perpendicular to the lines of
force. (2mks)

2. The voltage, v = 100sin377t – 20sin1885t, is applied to a 200-turn transformer winding.

Derive the equation for the flux in the core, neglecting leakage flux and winding resistance.
Determine the rms values of the voltage and the flux. (3 mks)

3. The electromagnet of the figure has

an effective closed magnetic path length
ℓ, a gap width of g, pole faces of area S,
and is wound with n turns. Find the total
reluctance and the inductance of the
electromagnet. (5mks)

4. A B–H loop for a type of electric

steel sheet is shown in the figure.

hysteresis loss per cycle in a torus of
300 mm mean diameter and a
square cross section of 50 × 50 mm.
(4mks)
5. A 10 kVA, 500/250 V, single-phase transformer has its maximum efficiency of 94% when
delivering 90% of its rated output at unity p.f. Estimate its efficiency when delivering its
full-load output at p.f. of 0.8 lagging. (6 mks)

6. A 100-MVA 230/115-kV A-Y three-phase power transformer has a per-unit resistance of 0.015 pu and
a per-unit reactance of 0.06 pu. The excitation branch elements are

(c) Sketch the equivalent circuit referred to the low-voltage side of one phase of this
transformer. Calculate all the transformer impedances referred to the low-voltage side.(6mks)
(d)Determine the losses in the transformer and the efficiency of the transformer under the
conditions of part (b). (7 mks)
