Assignment 2.1

An airplane is moving at 120 m/s at an angle of 10o with x-axis, through a 30 m/s cross
wind, blowing at angle of 260o with x-axis. Determine the resultant velocity of the
airplane.

Given Data

 V1 = 120 m/s , = 10o with positive x-axis

 V2 = 30 m/s , = 260o with positive x-axis
To Find

 Resultant velocity = V = ?

Solution

 Force 2 = F2 = 10 N, = 120o with +ve x-axis

To Find

 Resultant Force = R = ?
 Balancing Force = B = ?

Solution

Assignment 2.5

A uniform plank of weight 200 N and length 6 m is supported by a rope as shown

in the figure. If the breaking tension of rope is 400 N. How far can a boy of 400 N
walk towards the support?

Given Data

 weight of plank = Fp =200 N

 length of plank = lt 6 m , centre of gravity = lp= 3 m
 breaking tension = Ft= 400 N
 weight of boy = Fm = 400 N

To Find

Maximum distance of boy = d = ?

Solution

Downward forces are weight of boy and weight of plank

Clockwise torque is due to downward forces

9|11th Physics Ch.2 Assignments ILMI STARS ACADEMY (0312-5969383)

Clockwise torque = torque boy + toque plank

Clockwise torque = (weight boy × distance) + (weight plank × distance)

Clockwise toque = ( 400 N × d ) + ( 200 N × 3m )

Clockwise toque = 400 N × d + 600 Nm

Upward force is tension in rope

Anticlockwise torque is due to upward force

Anticlockwise torque = torque tension

Anticlockwise torque = Tension × distance

Anticlockwise torque = 400 N × 6 m

Anticlockwise torque = 2400 Nm

By applying second condition of equilibrium

Clockwise toque = Anticlockwise torque

400 N × d + 600 Nm = 2400 Nm

400 N × d = 2400 Nm – 600 Nm

400 N × d = 1800 Nm

d = 1800 Nm / 400 N

d = 4.5 m

Distance boy can walk = d = 4.5 m
