Assignment 1.1 : A pulley of radius 0.9 m is used to lift a bucket from the well. If it took 3.6
rotations for the pulley to take water out of the well, how deep is water in the well?

Given Data

 Radius of pulley = 0.9 m

 No.of rotations = 3.6

To Find

 Depth of water = ?

Solution

Depth = circumference of pulley × no.of rotations

By putting

circumference = 2πr = 2 × 3.14 × 0.9 m

no.of rotation = 3.6

Depth = 2 × 3.14 m × 0.9 × 3.6

Depth = 20.34 m

Depth = 20 m Ans

Assignment 1.2: A physicist calculated the wall width of brick thickness (the brick is laid in a
flat position, lengthwise called stretcher position) as (13.6 0.1) cm. And one brick
thickness (the brick is placed in flat position, lengthwise orthogonal to wall, called header
position), as (23.6 0.1) cm. Calculate the difference in width of walls with uncertainty in it.

Given Data

 Width of half-brick thick wall = d1 d1 = (13.6 0.1) cm

 Width of one-brick thick wall = d2 d2 = (23.6 0.1) cm

To Find

 Difference in widths = d = ?
 Uncertainty in widths = d = ?

Solution

Difference in widths d = d2 – d1

Difference in widths d = 23.6 cm – 13.6 cm

Difference in widths d = 10.0 cm

Now

Uncertainty in widths d = d1 + d2

Uncertainty in widths d = 0.1 cm + 0.1 cm

Uncertainty in widths d = 0.2 cm

Final result;

Difference in widths Uncertainty = d d

Difference in widths Uncertainty = (10.0 0.2) cm Ans

Given Data

 Voltage = ( )=( )V
 Current = ( )=( )A

To Find

 Resistance = ( )

Solution

According to Ohm’s Law

R =

By putting values of V and I

R =

R = 2.7

Now for (apply product-quotient rule)

% age uncertainty in R = % age uncertainty in V + %age uncertainty in I

Now;

Assignment 1.4: The radius of sphere ‘r’ is measured with vernier calipers as (r ± ) = (2.25
± 0.01) cm. Calculate the volume of sphere.

Given Data

 Radius = (r ± ) = (2.25 ± 0.01) cm

To Find

 Volume = (V ± )=?

Solution

As we know that volume of sphere is;

Assignment 1.6: Show that following equations are dimensionally correct;

a)

Solution

In the form of units;

= + ×s

Now in the form of dimensions;

[L ]=[L ]+[L ]×[T]

[L ]=[L ]+[L ]

[L ]=2[L ]

Since the dimensions of both sides are same so above equation is dimensionally correct.

b)

Solution

In the form of units;

m= + ×

Now in the form of dimensions;

[L]= [ ] [ ] + [ ]×[ ]

[L]=[L]+ [ ]

[L]= [ ]

Since the dimensions of both sides are same therefore above equation is dimensionally
correct.

Assignment 1.7: Find an expression for the time period ‘T’ of a simple pendulum. The time
period ‘T’ may depend upon (i) mass ‘m’ of the bob of the pendulum, (ii) length ‘l’ of
pendulum, (iii) acceleration due to gravity ‘g’ at the place where the pendulum is suspended.

Solution

Suppose time period T directly depends on mass m, length l and gravitational acceleration g;

T m×l×g

And m, l, and g are raised to some powers a, b, and c respectively;

T × ×

or T =k× × × where k is proportionality constant

in the form of dimensions;

[T] =k× [ ] ×[ ] ×[ ]

[T] =k× [ ] ×[ ] ×[ ]

[T] =k× [ × ]

By comparing the powers on both sides;

a = 0

–2c = 1

c = –½

b+c=0

b + (– ½) = 0

b–½=0

b= ½

By putting the values of a, b, and c in the equation;

T = k× × ×
