CHAPTER ONE

The Problem

INTRODUCTION

This study focuses on Facebook which is a social networking service that

was launched last 2004. It has over one billion active users, mostly used through

mobile devices. As a result of this, most students are now getting active, craving for

more information about the positive and negative issues of our country. Somehow it

helps by means of timely informative news.

In addition, Facebook users take advantage of this application by creating

group chats by which users with common interest and topics may communicate to

each other. Some would have a list of their friends and categories such as Grade 12

Technical Vocational Livelihood Students. Facebook contributes to the community

thru its in depth details and illustration of news. It gives an opportunity to the user

the freedom to express their thoughts and interest with their friend lists. Through

this, it serves as a networking tool for colleagues to still stay in touch always. But its

benefits also have its disadvantages especially through time management and

socialization. This leads to communicating with pretentious persons that take

advantage of those who get addicted to such. Taking into consideration those

advantages and disadvantages of Facebook, students should weigh the relevance

of things.
Users must register before using the site, after which they can create their

own personal profile, add other users as friend, and exchange messages, including

automatic notifications when they update their profile.

In May 2005 Accel partners invested $12.7 million in Facebook, and Jim

Brayer added $1 million of his own money to the pot. According to a May 2011

Consumer Report survey, there are 7.5 million children under with account and 5

million under 10, violating the site’s terms of service.

Furthermore, (Bedassa, Year 2014) various researchers have conducted

studies to pinpoint the several effects of the site on their users and thus resulting to

significant and negative aspects. Hence, many countries have gained open access to

the internet due to rapid advances and information technology within last twenty years

(Kuppuswamy & Narayan, 2010). In fact, the Worldwide Web, originally created in

1990 for US military forces, become not only an effective instrument for the

management of US army, but later a convenient tool that was issued to civilians for

communication, entertainment and learning purposes. One of the most popular and

recognized platforms used on the Internet are social networking sites such as
