THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 1

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Facebook’s birth can be traced back on February 2004, when 19 years old Mark

Zuckerberg launched the site as a Harvard Sophomore on February 4, 2004. This site has

become one of the biggest website in the world visited by approximately four hundred

million people a month. This is a list of software and technology features that in a social

media site. Facebook is one of the earliest methods of communicating across great

distance. It features includes the newsfeed, friends, wall, timeline, likes and reactions,

comments, message and inbox, notifications and groups.

At recent time, Facebook had manipulated newsfeeds to show their moods, based on

whether the post is positive or negative. Facebook became one of the social media craze

that have much wider variety of users including students that one of its “biggest fan”.

Facebook is now changing the way hundreds of millions of people related to one another

and store information.

Nowadays, all people young and old are actively engaged in using their own Facebook

account to share ideas and communicate with their friends. Most of the students spent

their time in using Facebook. There are also certain situations that projects and

requirements of the student was posted in their wall/timeline for specific purposes. On the

other hand there are certain impacts that Facebook have done to students.

In Jones Rural School, Facebook become one of the popular social media site that

students and teachers mostly use. Mrs. Angelic P. De Vera, PhD, Principal of Jones Rural

School and Mrs. Aileen Joy Rabago- Mora, Joneslite Adviser, disseminates information

through the use of Facebook by posting it to their school’s Facebook page and blog.

The researchers conducted this study to determined impacts of Facebook on students’

academic performance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to know the impacts of Facebook that affect their

academic performance in school. Specifically, it sought to answer the following

problems:

1. What are the things that they get and sacrificed when they use Facebook?

2. What are the features of Facebook where the Grade 11 students get addicted?

3. What are the impacts of Facebook to the academic performance of Grade 11

students?

1.3 Significance of the Study

The result of this study will give an insight about the impacts of Facebook to the

students’ academic performance that will benefit the following group:

To the students. To inform every students on how they are being affected on using

Facebook especially to their academic performance in school.

To the parents. It will serve as a basis to share with other parents the information

about being engaged in using Facebook to help each other in parenting in order to help

their children to lessen their time in using Facebook.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social networking sites let individuals present themselves and begin or keep

connections with others. The extremely popular social networking site affects the

students to different levels. Facebook has already printed a big impact on their lives.

Some people may use the application or the site to mingle with people they already know

through online or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present themselves to

the internet or their Facebook profile, building-up friends who can able to post or

comment on each other walls and view other pages.

Facebook can also join groups based on common interests, see what things they have

in common and learn others hobbies, interests, favourite music and romantic relationship

status through their pages. Facebook together with all of its innovative features have been

known as of these days due to advancement in technology.

There are numerous research conducted before that was connected or relevant to this

study. The majority of these studies chosen by the researchers have been published in the

past five to seven years.

According to Newman (2013), the students get distraction from their studies, and a

load of their working memory makes it hard for them to have focus and makes effective

preparations of their homework. This will lead to results that are poor and decrease the

achievements.

As expressed by Tess (2013), Facebook is the most popular social networking site

among students as reported by some researcher and it has reach a one billion user-based

in October 2012. This research found blogs, social impact, etc. Poor performance have
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 6

been associated with personality, traits or other behavioural or psychological aspects

rather than solely with the use of these platforms.

Junco (2013) investigates the impacts of Facebook being a social medium on students’

performance on academic course

There is indeed specific impact of social media on the performance of students in

distance education. This research is more important due to the fact that distance learning

is totally dependent on social networking technologies like Facebook. This study

concerned with the respondent’s psychology towards using technologies for the purposes

of education and identification of suitable tools and technologies to achieve academic

goals and objectives, Newman (2013)

Chard (2012) analysed the patterns as well as the frequency of using Facebook among

students with a major focus on gender differences and student’s opinion regarding the

impacts that the medium has on academic performances.

In accordance to Garcia (2011), Facebook usages have apparent impacts, both positive

and negative on student and Facebook has greatly affected their academic lives.

As sustained by Kirschner and Karpinski (2011), Facebook user spent less time in

studying and they had lower grades than those who did not use social networking sites.

As stated by Kabre, Brown, and Rosen (2011), Facebook usage has no effect on

academic performance of students. In relation with this worsening phenomenon, this

study will seek to analyse the impact of Facebook addiction on the academic performance

in a multi-perspective approach which some previous studies failed to do so.

As said by Thadani (2011), today’s largest social networking site which is enjoyed by

millions of people around the world was created by Mark Zuckerberg.

THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 7

Cited in the unfulfilled internet articles of Elvin and Radwan (2011), social needs and

social approval are some of the reasons of social networking addiction. There are many

issues that have not been resolved through years and one of which is social networking

sites

Facebook being a social networking site, provides an online platform and share

information and contents and have interactions with contacts both known and unknown.

The review has found a mix of opinion attributed whether Facebook alongside other

social networking platforms ought to be integrated into learning processes or not,

Kirkpatrick (2010).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

For this qualitative research entitled “The Impacts of Facebook to Academic

Performance as Perceived by the Grade 11 Students” mostly dealt with interview. As a

qualitative research, data gathered and presented is in the form of words, descriptions and

observations. Qualitative research is an interpretive naturalistic approach to the world.

This means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting to

make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them

(Denzin and Lincoln, 2005, p.3).

Case study was the research approach used by the researchers. Case study method as

an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life

context; when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident;

and in which multiple sources of evidence are used (Yin, 1984, p. 23). It is the

appropriate approach to use in this study because the research will only focus to one

particular topic which is impacts of Facebook addiction wherein they can get an in-depth

investigation of one group and at the same time a summary of the whole observation and

interview of a group to come up with the outcome.

3.2 Participants of the Study

The participants in this research are the Grade 11 students of Jones Rural School. The

study will use purposive sampling to gather data for the respondents. Purposive sampling

was used because the specific purpose of this study is to know the impacts of Facebook to
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 9

Grade 11 students’ academic performance. The respondents will be selected from the

STEM, ABM and HUMSS strand and TVL track.

In the study that was conducted, there are 16 students from the Grade 11. The

researchers used typical sampling in identifying the respondents of the study. Typical

sample is a type of purposive sampling that typical representative of that being studied.

Typical sampling was used by the researchers to identify the participants involved in this

study because the researchers are gathering participants only from the Grade 11 students.

3.3 Setting of the Study

The study was conducted at Jones Rural School especially at the Senior High School.

The estimated population of Jones Rural School is 2000 students from Junior High

School and Senior High School. The school can be found at Brgy.2, Jones, Isabela.

As of now, the school is very useful and high-tech during studies. The school use

Facebook to make the study easier than before and give more knowledge to explore and

deal with the present situation and circumstances happening at present that makes every

student updated and aware of it.

The research is suitable to this school because due to the said advancement, students

are familiar on using social media account including Facebook.

3.4 Research Instruments

The researchers will conduct the study through the use of:

Interviews- This instrument become necessary when the researchers need a one-on-

one interaction to students who are engaged in Facebook in order to generate and gain

more information and opinions.

THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 10

3.5 Data Gathering Procedure

For the purpose of this research, there are certain steps that the researchers need to

follow and use in order to identify the emotions, feelings, ideas, and opinions of the

participants’ related to this study. It includes:

First, the researchers identified the participants or respondents. The researchers

identified first the participants of the study that will serve as basis. The researchers must

focus in identifying the participants in order to find out the coverage of the said study.

After identifying the participants, the researchers seek permission to them.

Lastly, the researchers conducted a one on one interview. In order to validate all the

behaviours and information that the researcher observed, a one-on-one interview will do

by the researchers. This way of interviewing was used by the researchers because unlike

focus group interview, there are certain instances that the other participant may copy or

restate the answer of his\her fellow participant.

3.6 Data Analysis Procedure

In order to understand the entire idea or thought of the interviews and observations,

the researchers have certain steps to be done which includes:

First, the data taken from the study must be organize and arrange from the most

important to less important details from the data gathered for easily understanding. Next,

the data taken from questionnaires given by the researchers was reviewed in order to

separate different answers from other information. Then, the researchers sorted data from

each Senior High School Track in order to know the difference between the data obtained

in each track. After that, the researchers reflected to the overall meaning of the data

obtained. Following this, the researchers described the summary of the interview and
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 11

observation from the said study. Lastly, the focus of the interpretation of the data

gathered is on the perception, side and opinions of the respondents regarding to this

study.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents findings, analysis and interprets the data gathered from students’

academic information. In this chapter, the researchers describe the qualitative analysis of

the data gathered.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impacts of Facebook to a student’s

academic performance. The researchers used conduct an interview to gather data from the

participants. The following research questions informed this study: (a) How many hours

do you use Facebook in a day? (b) What are the characteristics and features of Facebook

that the other social media does not have? (c) How much money do you spend when you

use Facebook? (d) What are the features of Facebook that you are getting addicted? ; and

(e) How does Facebook helps you in your school performance?

The participants of the study were comprised of 16 Grade-11 students coming from

STEM, HUMSS, ABM and TVL. During the interview, participants shared their ideas,

opinions and perceptions regarding to this study. Those data gathered will support this

study.

There are three(3) themes that emerged from the data that the researchers gathered:

1. The amount of time and money that the participants mostly spend when using

Facebook.

2. The features of Facebook that the other social media does not have and where they

get addicted.

3. The perceptions of the participants about the help of Facebook to their academic

performance in school.
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 13

The themes have a specific connection and help to the study. There is overlapping of

ideas between each theme. Further, participants’ responses to interview questions often

addressed more than one theme. In those cases, the interview data are described where

they appear to fit most logically.

4.2 Analysis and Interpretation of Data

In the beginning the data is raw in nature but after it is arranged in a certainformat or a

meaningful order this raw data takes the form of the information. Themost critical and

essential supporting pillars of the research are the analysis and the interpretation of the

data.

There are five questions asked by the researchers to the 16 participants of the study. In

order to analyse the entire thought of the study, the three(3) themes that emerged from the

data gathered are explained by the researchers briefly.

Theme 1: The amount of time and money that the participants mostly spend when using

Facebook.

There are two questions connected to this theme (a) How many hours do you use

Facebook in a day? (b)How much money do you spend when you use Facebook? that the

participants answered through interview.

In the first question which is the amount of time they spent when using Facebook, the

mostly given answer of the participants are 1-2 hours of time that they spent when using

Facebook. It means that the participants mostly spent their time on other things and not

Facebook. According to the interview, they do not spend most of their time when using

Facebook because it can just be a waste of time for them. They also said that instead of

using Facebook, they can use their time in studying. There are some students who

answered 5-6 hours and other are 10-12 hours of using Facebook daily.

In the question How much money they spend when using Facebook?, most of the

participants answered none( free data) and others are Php 50.00 with five(5) respondents

in each answer.
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 19

Both questions means that time to study and money are the main thing that they

sacrificed when they are using Facebook.

Theme 2: The features of Facebook that the other social media does not have and where

they get addicted.

Facebook is one of the popular sites in the internet that has a lot of features. The

second theme explains about the different features of Facebook that other social media

does not have and where students get addicted. The 16 respondents of the study has a

different answer compare to each other. The most common Facebook feature that

appeared as the participants answer the question is Messenger that they use when

communicating with their relatives and friends and where they can received information

and updates from school. It is the most common answer given by four(4) participants.

There are numerous answers given by the 16 participants which includes My Day,

uploading pictures and videos, timeline, newsfeed, pages and video call.

Theme 3: The perceptions of the participants about the help of Facebook to their

academic performance in school.

Many of the participants have a different perception about the help of Facebook to

their academic performance in school. The third theme is about the positive and negative

impact of Facebook to the students. There are six answers given by the respondents

which includes:

Positive help of Facebook:

Getting updated.

Gather informations.

Posting of projects and requirements.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusion and recommendation based

on the findings and result of the study. The purpose of this study was to determine the

impacts of Facebook to the students’ academic performance. Research was conducted

through structured face-to face interviews with sixteen (16) respondents coming from

Grade-11 students of Jones Rural School. This chapter reviews, analyses, and discusses

the findings of this study. This chapter also outlines the implications of the findings for

school purposes, and illustrates the potential impact for students who use Facebook. This

chapter concludes with suggestions for further research.

5.1 Summary of Findings

This study was conducted at Jones Rural School. The chosen participants of the study

are 16-18 years old. Most of them are female presentedby 13 out of 16. As the result

suggests, there are numerous differences and similarities of the answers of the

participants about the impacts of using Facebook to the academic performance of

students in school.

There are three themes that emerged as the researchers gather relevant information

from the participants about the study. Each theme is associated with several questions

that the participants answered during the conduct of the interview.

10 out of 16 participants are using their Facebook accounts 2-8 hours per day while

the 6 remaining participants spent most of their time using Facebook.

THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 22

Most of the participants believe that Messenger is the Facebook feature that they get

addicted with because it is not found on other social media sites. Other answers include

My Day, timeline, newsfeeds, video calling and its accessibility as an entertainment.

In the question which is “ How does Facebook helps you in your academic

performance?”, 12 out of 16 participants says positive impacts of Facebook to their

academic performance which includes faster communication, getting updated, posting of

projects and requirements and can gather information while the 4 participants left says

negative impacts of Facebook which are distraction and getting fake informations.

5.2Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Time and money are the things that students are wasting as they use their Facebook

account. Time, that they canuse to study their lessons are the number one thing that the

students are wasting because instead of studying, they are just spending their time on

scrolling feeds and chatting with their Facebook friends.

2. There are lots of features of Facebook where students are getting addicted which

includes the messenger used for communication, group chats, timeline, newsfeed and

others.

4. There are impacts of Facebook that affects the academic performance of students in

school. It includes the following:

Positive impacts of Facebook:

THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 23

Getting updated. With the help of Messenger and Facebook feeds, students can be

updated about events and activities in school. Some teachers also send updates to their

group chats including class suspensions.

Gather informations. Facebook newsfeeds give or shows information about certain

issue. There are also links that appears to this site. There are also inspiring quotes about

God and good sayings.

Posting of projects and requirements. Because we are in the 21 st century, most of

the teachers ask their students to post or upload projects and requirements in Facebook.

The number of likes and reactions that they get will be added to their school grade.

Faster communication. Messenger and video calls are some of the features of

Facebook that enable the users to communicate with their relatives and friends in a faster

way.

Negative impacts of Facebook:

Distraction. Distraction is the number one negative impact of Facebook to the

students. Participants said that some of them mostly spend their time on using Facebook

instead of studying their lessons. There are also instances wherein they waste their time

on using Facebook.

Fake informations. There are fake informations and fake news that spreading in

Facebook. These fake information may causes confusions to the students that read it.

However, the most common problem that the students facing right now is their

academic performance caused by using Facebook. As conclude by one of the participants

is that using Facebook does not have advantage but it gives to them a problem that can

affect their academic performance. But some of the students said that using Facebook has
THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PERCEIVED BY THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS 24

advantage because they can posting their requirements through Facebook but the

disadvantage of this according to the participants is some teachers depending on how

many Facebook likes and reactions that the students can get is used to add on their

grades.

5.3 Recommendations

Based on the said findings and conclusions arrived at the study, the following

recommendations are hereby suggested:

1. Students must lessen their time in using Facebook. Do not spend money on using

Facebook especially if it is not an important matter.

2. Students should be aware on how their academic performance in school are being

affected when they are spending their time using Facebook.

3. Parents should help their children to lessen the use of Facebook. They should make

an environment wherein free from social media sites and can increase their academic

performance in school.

4. Teachers should be aware on the effects and differences of using Facebook on

passing the requirements of their students that can affect their academic performance.

5. Further studies along this line are also highly encouraged. In addition, qualitative

research in this area could compliment the qualitative research undertaken in this

study to provide more comprehensive insights into the impacts of Facebook to the

students’ academic performance.
