Chapter 2
Activity 1
Q1. What are the different appliances/equipment that you think can be added to Smart
buildings?
The advancement in the Internet of Things technology is slowly making more and more
devices, equipment, and appliances intelligent. Some of these smart devices that can make
buildings smarter are:
1. Smart electricity and water meters
2. Smart cameras, locks, and security systems
3. Smart bulbs, switches, lightings, etc.
4. Smart TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.
Q2. What is the difference between Smart Homes and Smart Buildings?
Smart buildings are buildings that use multiple smart devices for making themselves
smarter. Any building can be made smarter, for example, fire stations, police stations,
offices, schools, colleges, temples, churches, homes, etc.
Smart homes are houses that use multiple smart devices. Every smart house is a smart
building, but every smart building is not a smart house.
1. Hacking: Hackers can steal the data sent by these devices; for example, live camera feed
from bedrooms or audio feed from different areas of the house.
2. Terrorists: Criminals and terrorists might be able to get remote access to systems in
critical places like airports, power plants, etc. and create havoc.
3. Privacy: The smart devices collect much data about the person and might know secrets
that are not known to even close friends of the person. The collection, storage, and usage of
this personal information might raise serious privacy concerns.
4. Surveillance: The data being collected by smart buildings can be used by governments for
surveillance. Such actions violate the human rights enjoyed by individuals.
Q4. Write a few points on how living in Smart Cities will change your life.
Smart cities of the future will completely change the way I live my life today in the following
ways:
1. My parents will no longer need to remind me about my daily chores. My computer/smart
device will not work until I complete them. These devices will also regularly remind me
about the chores.
2. I will decide on the dish that I want to eat. My smartphone will talk to the refrigerator
and kitchen cupboards. It will see what ingredients are available and order the rest. It will
also provide me with the recipe for it.
3. I will have reduced visits to the hospital. The sensors in the house will monitor me and
suggest remedies if something is wrong. These sensors, along with my refrigerator and
kitchen, will also monitor my growth and ensure that I receive the required nutrients.
4. I will be more secure in the house, which will have smart security systems.
Q5. What are the few AI-based technologies that you are using in your day-to-day life?
Some of the AI-based technologies that are being used by me today in my day-to-day life
are:
1. AI-based navigations systems like google maps for finding locations and planning journeys
4. AI-based translation systems like Google Translate for translating words from one
language to another
