1. (a) Let f (t) given below be the distance covered by a particle after t time:
t(t − 2)2

if t ∈ [1, 2],
f (t) =
t2 (t − 2)3 if t ∈ [2, 4].
Can average velocity be equal to instantaneous velocity? If so, find the time
t∗ ∈ (1, 4) at which it happens. [4]
(b) Determine the values of constants a, b, c such that v = (x + 2y + az)i + (bx −
3y − z)j + (4x + cy + 2z)k is irrotational. Also find (i) scalar potential, and
(ii) the work done in moving a particle under this force field from (1, 2, −4) to
(3, 3, 2). [3]
(c) Find the flux of the vector field F = (2x + 3z)i − (xz + y)j + (y 2 + 2z)k across
the surface of the sphere having centre (3, −1, 2) and radius 3. [3]
2. (a) A parabolic reflector of an automobile headlight is 24 cm in diameter and 8 cm
in depth. Find the cost of plating the front portion of the reflector if the cost
of plating is Rs. 6 per square cm. [4]
(b) Find the volume of the cylinder x2 +y 2 = 2ax intercepted between the paraboloid
x2 + y 2
z= and the xy-plane. Also find the total mass. [6]

(b) Find the linear Taylor polynomial approximation to the function f (x, y) =
πx
x sin about the point (1, 1) and obtain the maximum absolute error in
y
the region |x − 1| < 0.01 and |y − 1| < 0.1. [5]
