The Most Common Teaching Styles
No two teachers are equal, and any teacher with
classroom teaching experience will agree that their
style of teaching is uniquely their own. Teachers
need to focus on the students’ learning abilities
and must adapt their teaching styles to benefit
each individual student and the classroom as a
whole. Here are four common classroom teaching styles that help teachers better
connect with their students.
Authority figure: the formal authority strategy is one of the most popular and
widely used teaching styles. Authority figures act as the center of attention,
demanding all students to focus on the teacher’s direct instruction. In order to
maintain control of the classroom, any type of misbehavior must be dealt with
quickly. The teacher maintains power through negative punishments in a severe
manner.
Student-centered: A student-oriented teaching style focuses heavily on each
particular student, as this style assumes every student learns in a different
capacity. Teachers must spend more time with each individual student,
accommodating the lesson plans to fit the student’s needs. This teaching style is
ideal in smaller settings, but may not suit a larger classroom.
Facilitator: Teachers create several activities and provide the classroom with
materials, placing the impetus on students to complete assignments individually or
in groups. Teachers may walk around the classroom to help facilitate thoughts
about the subject matter, or they may stay at their desk answering questions when
necessary. Facilitators trust students to help their classmates and derive answers
mostly on their own.
Delegator: The delegator is very similar to the facilitator, but much more emphasis
is placed on driving the students learning. The teacher prepares complex
situations or problems that students must resolve individually or as a group. The
teacher allows students to design and implement their own interests and projects,
and reinforces the friendships and relationships among the students. The teacher
acts as a consultant, providing guidance and support only in times of great need.

III. Read each passage and answer the questions that follow.

A boycott is an organized refusal by people to deal with a person or group in order to

reach a certain goal. An example is the famous boycott that began in 1955 when Mrs.
Rosa Parks of Montgomery, Alabama, refused to obey a law requiring black people to
sit at the back of city buses. Mrs. Parks was arrested, and her arrest sparked a boycott
of the city bus system by African Americans. The boycott was organized and led by Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Rather than continue to lose money needed to run the bus
system, the city changed the law.

III. Read each passage and answer the questions that follow.

The story of the city mouse and the country mouse is one version of the age-old
debate between the people who prefer city life and those who prefer country life. In the
city there is always something to do. But in the country, you can always find peace and
quiet. In the city, you are constantly exposed to new and different kinds of people. On
the other hand, in the country, you are always among familiar faces. These are the
images we have. The reality is less clear-cut. Rural towns do have their night spots, and
even New York City has places to escape to and be alone with your thoughts.
