Direction: Identify the organelle from the illustration above and describe its function
briefly.

No. Organelle Function

1 Mitochondria Produce ATP/Site of cellular
2 Centriole Source of microtubules in animal cell
3 Vacuole Vacuoles are generally small and help sequester waste
products
4 Cytoplasm Provides turgor pressure to plant cells as fluid inside the
central vacuole; site of many metabolic reactions;

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN GENERAL BIOLOGY 1 QUARTER 1 WEEK 2

Content Standard:
Cell types
Performance Standard:
Construct a 3D model of a plant / animal / bacterial cell using recyclable materials
Most Essential Learning Competency:
Classify different cell types (of plant / animal tissues) and specify the functions of
each

Activity 1. Cells Makes Up Tissues

Direction: Write down the functions of the following plant cell types illustrated.
A. Plant cell types

Function/s: All parenchyma cells are

capable of cell division and living at
maturity, giving them important roles in
regeneration and wound healing.
Photosynthesis, storage, secretion, and
transport are also important functions of
these cells.

Function/s: It gives the petiole, leaf

veins, and stem of young plants support,
structure, mechanical strength, and
flexibility, allowing for easy bending
without breaking.

Function/s: Their primary purpose is to

provide mechanical support and
protection.

Direction: Illustrate, after viewing slide samples under the microscope, using a pencil,
the human tissue asked and write down one or two of its functions and where it is
commonly located in the body.

B. Animal tissues

1. Stratified squamous epithelium

Stratified squamous epithelium: This type of epithelium typically has protective
functions, such as protection against invading microorganisms and/or protection
against water loss. The epidermis (the outer layer of your skin) is made up of
stratified squamous epithelial cells.

2. Ciliated pseudostratified epithelium

Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelial cells, which are most common along
the respiratory tract, help trap and transport particles that enter through the
nasal passages and lungs. Ciliated epithelium lines the trachea, the bronchi of the
lungs, parts of the nasal cavities, the female uterus and oviduct, and the male vas
deferens and epididymis.

3. Simple columnar epithelium

A single layer of cells that are taller than they are wide makes up simple columnar
epithelium. This type of epithelia lines the small intestine and absorbs nutrients
from the intestine's lumen. Simple columnar epithelia are also found in the
stomach, where acid, digestive enzymes, and mucous are secreted.

Activity 2. Specialized Cells

Figure 5. Specialized cells. Specialized cells developed from a group of pluripotent cells
in the blastocyst stage of human development or stem cells of adult humans. A-G
are some of the most common specialized cells in the human body.

Direction: Fill up the biography-resume for a specialized cell of your choice discussing
its corresponding characteristics for the questions asked. You are free to research
further about your chosen specialized cell. Be creative in providing your answers in the
context of the cell you have selected.

Draw your specialized cell here complete with its cellular organelles.
