ACTIVITY #1

Part I.
Complete the table by identifying if the distinguishing structures of cells are present or absent.

Structure Function Prokaryotes Plants Animals

Cell Surface

Cell wall Protects, support cell Present Present Absent

Isolate cell contents from the environment.

Plasma membrane regulates the movement of materials into

and out of the cell; communicates with
other cells
Organization of Genetic Material

The membrane-bound container of

Nucleus
chromosomes

Encloses nucleus regulates the movement

Nuclear envelop
of materials in and out of the nucleus

Nucleolus Synthesizes ribosomes

Nucleoid Region of coiled chromosome

Plasmid A small ring of DNA

Ribosomes Provide site of protein synthesis

Endomembrane System

Synthesizes membrane components and

Endoplasmic Reticulum
lipids

Modifies and packages proteins and lipids;

Golgi complex
synthesizes carbohydrates

Lysosomes Contains cellular digestive enzymes

Contains water and wastes; provide turgor

Central Vacuole
pressure to support cell
Contain food obtained through
Other vesicles and vacuoles
phagocytosis; contain secretory products

Gives shape and support to cell; positions

Cytoskeleton
and moves cell parts

Synthesize microtubules of cilia and flagella;

Centrioles
may produce spindle in animal cells

Move the cell through fluid or move fluid

Cilia and flagella
past the cell surface

Energy Houses

Mitochondria Produce energy by aerobic metabolism

Chloroplast Perform photosynthesis

Part II. Prokaryotic Cell and Eukaryotic Cell

Compare and contrast prokaryotic cells with eukaryotic cells. Identify the organelles found in both
types of cells and the distinguishably unique features of prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Use a
Venn diagram to show your answer.
Essay:
Answer the questions below with at least 5 sentences.

2. Gaucher disease is a type of lysosomal storage disorder. It is the result of a buildup of certain
fatty substances in certain organs, particularly in spleen and in the liver. This causes these
organs to enlarge and can affect their function. Why do you think this happens in the cells of
the spleen or liver?
