INSTRUCTIONAL MODULE IN SCI 1

Earth and Life Science
Week 12

TIME ALLOTMENT: 4 Hours

ONLINE CLASS: STEM11A W 7:30-8:50
STEM11B W 8:50-10:10
ABM11A W 10:10-11:30

CONTENT: Biogernetics

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
At the end of the week, learners are expected to:
1. differentiate unicellular and multicellular organisms; and
2. explain the different parts of an animal and plant cell.
LEARNING RESOURCES:
1. Religioso, Teresita F., Vengco Lilia G., You and the Natural World: Earth and Life Science, Phoenix
Publishing House, 2016
2. Zumdahl, Steven. Earth and Life Science 4th ed. Boston.
3. Dela Pena, Renato A., Gracilla, Daniel E, Pangilinan, Christian R., Earth and Life Science, JFS Publishing
Services, 2016.
4. ADM, Department of Education, Philippines, First Edition 2020.

INTRODUCTION:

The cell (from Latin cella, meaning "small room") is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all
known organisms. A cell is the smallest unit of life. Cells are often called the "building blocks of life".

Cell theory is the historic scientific theory, now universally accepted, that living organisms are made up of cells,
that they are the basic structural/organizational unit of all organisms, and that all cells come from pre-existing
cells.

PARTS AND FUNCTIONS OF A CELL

A B
Nucleus Regulates all cell activities
Cell Membrane Is made out of phospholipids and proteins
Mitochondrion Site of cellular respiration "power house"
Lysosome Suicide Sacks that contain digestive enzymes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Contains Ribosomes, transports proteins and
other materials
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Contains no ribosomes, stores proteins
Golgi complex (apparatus) Processes and packages proteins
Nucleolus Dark spot of chromatin in the nucleolus
where ribosomes are produced
Cytoplasm Colloid that contains water and nutrients
and supports the organelles
Organelles The parts of a cell with a particular function
Prokaryotic Cells with no true nucleus and no membrane
bound organelles
Eukaryotic Cells that contain a true nucleus and
membrane bound organelles
Centrioles Only in animal cells, aid in cell division
Ribosomes Produce Proteins
Chloroplast Found only in plants, site of photosynthesis
Vacuoles Large storage sacks found mainly in plants
Cell Wall Structure in plants made of cellulose that is
outside of the cell membrane
Chromatin Thin strands of DNA and proteins found in
the nucleus of a cell.
Cell Smallest unit of life
Cytoskeleton Long protein filaments in the cytosol that
support the cell.

LEARNING TASK:
General Instructions:
1. Read the module intended for Week 12.
2. Answer the Written Work/Performance Task given by the teacher.
3. Names in the outputs to be submitted shall have this format (placed at the upper most right corner of the
papers/pages).
<Last Name, First Name, Middle Initial><Strand & Section>
<Subject Code><Teacher’ First Name Initials and Last Name>
<Week Number><WW/PT Number>

4. Write your answers on a clean sheet of bond paper.

5. Send a CLEAR IMAGE of your answer thru chat tab in Microsoft Teams (private message to the teacher).
6. File names of the outputs to be submitted shall be named as follows:

WEEK 11
PERFORMANCE TASK 1

SPECIFIC DIRECTION: Make an edible cell of either plant or animal cell.

GOALS: Students will create a model of either plant or animal cell using various food items to represent each
part or organelle. Students will take a photo or documentation after they create an edible cell model.

SAMPLE ACTIVITY:

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
Compliance with the theme 30 %
Interesting, useful and informative 25 %
Originality works 25 %
The basic idea, concept, creative innovation work 20 %
Total: 100 %

Deadline of Submission: TBA

Congratulations for finishing the Module 12! You’re doing better than you think. I’m proud of you, keep going, you’ve
got this.
