Frida Kahlo put so many symbolic creatures in this
painting. She was not painting a realistic scene but
using these symbolic elements to express her
feelings. A bird often symbolizes freedom and life.
Especially a hummingbird which is colorful and
always hovering above flowers. But in this painting,
the hummingbird is black and lifeless. This might
be a symbol of Frida herself. Frida spent most of
her life in physical pain after the bus accident
happened when she was eighteen. After that, she
endured about thirty-five operations to fix her body.
She spent so many years bedridden and cannot
bear any children. This is a painting about her

Originally intent on channeling his creative energy
into black-and-white still life photography,
Morimura struggled to ascertain his identity and
decided to visualize this inner struggle through
self-portraiture. The collar of thorns signifies the
freedom that he never had because of his
gender.In order to evoke the identity of his
respective roles, Morimura recreates these images
through extensive makeup and props before
situating them in settings with which they would be
associated or locations that are completely foreign

to their identity.
COMPARISON AND
CONTRAST

Frida Kahlo’s painting style is unique because she always put herself in every artwork thar
she‘s creating no mattef what kind of art it is. Her styles are Surrealism, Modern art,
Symbolism and Magic realism. She often used animals and other living things on her
paintings that symbolizes specific things. Her color palettes are quite dull and vintage. On
the other hand, Yasumasa Morimura is an appropriate artist and his work of art is somewhat
colorful and bright unlike the original artist.He emphasizing the color details of the object
and sometimes changing it for another understanding from the viewer.

The similar reason between the two is that, they used portrait themselves in their artwork to
express their past experiences or their secrets. They use art to convey their feelings and
emotions and the picture on themselves in the artwork symbolizes that they must be the
one that viewers might understand.
