DISCOVER NORTHEAST MICHIGAN HISTORY

at the
Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan
OUR MISSION
The mission of Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan is to collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit
authentic articles and artifacts of art, history, and science to inspire curiosity, foster community pride
for all ages and abilities, and cultivate a personal legacy.

OUR VISION
The Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan Board of Trustees
recently approved a 1.5-million-dollar capital improvement project
that will transform 3000 square feet of exhibit space into a
contemporary, interactive, premiere history exhibit integrating
modern technology. This display has remained unchanged for
fifty-one years; thus its renovation ranks as a priority.
Modern audiences seek unique, immersive experiences the entire
family can enjoy. The Discover Northeast Michigan History
Exhibit will provide family-friendly experiences using 21st century
museum design and technology while chronicling eleven unique
time periods which celebrate Northeast Michigan’s heritage. This
aligns with Besser Museum’s mission to inspire curiosity, foster
community pride, and cultivate personal legacy.
To better serve our visitors’ wide range of ages, interests, and abilities, this exhibit will be designed
with multiple levels of engagement in the shared space. The contemporary display will provide
something for everyone, appealing to our youngest students as well as our life-long learners. As such,
the museum will help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for Northeast Michigan’s
heritage. Additionally, adults will feel confident knowing they can enjoy learning while their children
are invited to fully engage with hands-on, interactive exhibit components. Interpretive labels will
prompt adults to read aloud thought-provoking questions to their children and help guide them
toward discovery in turn strengthening social relationships, developing language skills, and
promoting critical thinking skills for young and old alike.
Once completed, the new Discover Northeast Michigan History Exhibit will showcase the best of
Northeast Michigan, displaying an accurate historical interpretation conveyed through modern
technology, hands-on components, and immersive displays. Each will foster a deeper understanding
and appreciation for the connection between our natural resources and the historic events that shaped
Northeast Michigan communities. Moreover, the new exhibit will encourage further discovery of the
region by encouraging visits to relevant locations throughout Northeast Michigan. Connecting
citizens to local history, amenities, and natural assets will aid in creating a sense of place and
belonging and enhance quality of life.
Together, our community has an opportunity to build a significant cultural experience inside the
Besser Museum that will yield long-lasting benefits for citizens of all ages.
Your support will inspire curiosity, foster community pride, and cultivate a personal legacy.

In 1962, local philanthropist, founder, and benefactor, Jesse Besser initiated the idea of building
a regional museum that would serve as the finest cultural center in Northeast Michigan.
The community has generously supported his vision for the past 60 years.
“What a great heritage Jesse Besser left us through the Besser Museum of Northeast Michigan.
Those of us who knew him are really appreciative of his original effort. He would be very
pleased that we are moving the facility to an even higher-level of excellence. So many in our
community are looking forward to this 21st century museum design that will revitalize 3000
square feet of exhibit space that has remained unchanged for the past 51 years. Together,
we are building a contemporary exhibit in the spirit of Jesse Besser’s innovative legacy.”
