Chapter 1: Nature and Elements of Communication

1. Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for
various purposes (CMO,s2013). It is focused on the development of students in communicative
competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multi-modal task that
provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multi-cultural
audience in a local of global context (CHED 2020). Purposive communication is also a communication
that means serving, tending to fulfill a conscious purpose, design or affecting a useful function, but not
as a result of planning or design according to Stuart Banks (September 2020). It is done with a purpose
in mind, not off the cuff, not winging it, not blurting it out whatever comes to mind (Martin, D. 2018).
This is non improvised form of communication that is formatted to effectively and efficiently relay
concepts and ideas across cultural and philosophical lines (Heyworth, E. 2019)

2. Communication Process

It is a dynamic process that begins with the conceptualizing of ideas by the sender who then transmits
the message through a channel to the receiver, who in turn gives the feedback in the form of some
message or signal within the given time frame.

3. Elements of Communication

There are 7 major elements of Communication

1. Sender - the person who initiates the conversation and has a conceptualized ideas that he wants to
convey to others.

2. Encoding- the sender begins with the encoding process wherein he uses certain words or non-verbal
methods such as symbols, signs, body gestures, etc. to translate the information into a message. .

3. Message- Once the encoding is finished, the sender gets the message. The message can be written,
oral, symbolic or non-verbal such as body gestures, silence, sighs, sounds, etc. or any other signal that
triggers the response of a receiver.

4. Communication Channel- The sender chooses the medium through which he wants to convey his
message to the recipient. It must be selected carefully in order to make the message effective and
correctly interpreted by the recipient. The choice of medium depends on the interpersonal relationships
between the sender and the receiver and also on the urgency to the message being sent.

5. Receiver- it is the person for whom the message is intended or targeted. He tries to comprehend it in
the best possible manner such that the communication objective is attained. The degree to which the
receiver decodes the message depends on his knowledge of the subject matter, experience, trust and
relationship with the sender.

6.Decoding - the receiver interprets the sender’s message and tries to understand it in the best possible
manner. An effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the message in exactly the
same way as it was intended by the sender.

7. Feedback - is the final step of the process that ensures the receiver has received the message and
interpreted it correctly as it was intended by the sender. It increases the effectiveness of the
communication as it permits the sender to know the efficacy of his message. The response of the
receiver can be verbal or non-verbal.

Noise shows as the barrier of communication.

Reflection

After I watched the video, I realized that there are process in communication. All I know when I talk to to
someone is that I'm just using my voice to express myself. But now, even my small gestures are also a
message even just my facial expression. While their is also a barrier why we misunderstood some
messages came from the sender and it affects us on communicating with them. Every elements of the
communication helps us to understood someone what are they trying to say or convey and also with us.
