Introduction

Insufficient and inequitable access to high quality tertiary education stands in the way of economic
development and poverty.

Significance of the study

The result of the study would significant to the following:

The students, they will able to know the different scholarship schemes in USM.

To the parents, the result of the study may provide a profound understanding of the different
scholarship schemes in USM.

To the future researchers, the findings of the study may serve a reference material and a guide for
future researchers who desire to conduct the same research on comparative study among different
scholarship schemes in USM.

Objectives of the study

The study aimed to determine the Comparative study among different scholarship schemes in USM.

Specially, it aimed to;

1. Determine the socio-economic profile of the students.

2. Assess the level of students satisfaction in terms of:
A. Financial
B. Mental
C. Academic performance

3. Determine if there is a significant difference among the scholarship schemes.

Scope and limitation of the study

The study covered the comparative study among different scholarship schemes in USM. This study will
be conducted in University of Southern Mindanao Kabacan. The respondents of the study were the ____
selected____ accounting students. The number of respondents were indentified through the use of
Slovin's formula, (n=N/1+Ne²).

where:

n= is the sample size

n= total population of students availed scholarship programs

e= is the marginal error

INTERNATIONAL

Scholarships for international students pursuing university studies have been available for decades
and are remarkably diverse.1 Established in the early 1900s, the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship is
likely the longest standing international scholarship program. More recent programs include the
Fulbright Scholarships established by the federal government of the United States to promote
international exchanges and understanding (1946), the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship
Plan through which member governments of the Commonwealth offer scholarships and fellowships to
citizens of other Commonwealth countries (1959), and the Ford Foundation International Fellowship
Program for emerging leaders in the developing world to pursue graduate studies (2001).

As these examples suggest, scholarships vary along many dimensions, such as the organization that
creates them (government, private philanthropy, or multi-lateral organization), the goals of the
scholarship (to foster cultural understanding, forge ties with other nations, promote human capital
development, and so on), the education level (undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate study) or
experience supported (studies, research, or professional experience), the population targeted (such as
nationals of specific nations, vulnerable youth, or students seeking careers in specific fields); the
duration of the scholarship (one year, multiple years, and so on); whether they provide full versus
partial funding; whether they require beneficiaries to return home; and other factors.

The Scholars Program

The Scholars Program is anchored on a belief in “the transformative power of individuals as catalysts
for broader change” (Burciul and Kerr, 2018). To enable individual agency, the Program aims to
expand access to high quality education for youth who exhibit academic promise, economic
disadvantage or vulnerability, leadership potential, and a commitment to giving back to society.

The Program includes financial and non-financial supports to help Scholars succeed in their studies
and transition to opportunities after graduation. These include academic and social supports (such as
orientation and tutoring); leadership, entrepreneurship, and community service training activities;
and access to networks, resources (such as counseling), and opportunities for professional preparation
(such as internships, mainly in Africa to strengthen ties to the continent among students studying
abroad). This holistic approach is designed to prepare and empower Scholars to become ethical
leaders and promote positive change in their communities.

To offer supports to Scholars, the Foundation formed a global partnership with non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) and a leadership academy in Africa, and some of the world’s leading universities
in Africa, Europe, Central and North America, and the Middle East. The Scholars Program has operated
at both the secondary and tertiary levels, and has worked with different partners over time; our
analysis focuses on the tertiary level (Fig. 1 shows tertiary partners included in this study).

METHODOLOGY
This chapter deals with the methods that were used in determining the comparative study among
different scholarship schemes in USM. This include areas such as the research design, respondents of
the study, sampling procedure, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical analysis.

Research design

The study will use a survey method and a quantitative descriptive research design. It will utilize
descriptive design to evaluate the data collected from the respondents to aid in the organization,
tabulation, and description of the data. A survey is a research method that will use questionnaire to
gather data from a specified sample of respondents to acquire information and insights into various
topics of interest. This will help in determining the socio-economic profile of the students and the
comparative study among different scholarship schemes in USM.

Respondents of the study

Due to the concurrent and potential risk brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the researchers will use
the stratified random probability sampling in this study. The study will use the Slovin's formula
(n=N/1+Ne²) to get the sample size of respondents in this study. The respondents were the selected
____ accounting students of USM Kabacan.

Sampling procedure

******

Research instrument

The researchers will use a researcher-made questionnaire. The survey questionnaire will be divided into
two (2) sections, the first part will be consist of the socio-economic profile of the accounting students of
USM Kabacan while the second part will be compose of the comparative study among different
scholarship schemes in USM.

The researchers will use a 4-point Likert scale in determining comparative study among different
scholarship schemes in USM. The respondents will rate the questions using the 4-point likert scale that
follows: 4 for strongly agree, 3 for moderately agree, 2 for moderately disagree, 1 for strongly disagree.

Data gathering procedure

The researchers will request permission from the head of Management Accounting program to permit
them to conduct the data collection in the campus. It will focus on the comparative study among
different scholarship schemes. The researchers will conduct the study by giving the questionnaire to the
respondents randomly. Due to the concurrent and potential risk brought by COVID-19 pandemic, they
will observe basic health protocols. They will gather, tabulate, and interpret the accomplished
questionnaire. Researchers adhere to the confidentiality of the gathered information and ethical
considerations. They will observe the inter-agency Task force safety and health protocols like wearing of
face mask, observing social distancing and bringing of alcohol will be observed during the duration of
the study.

Statistical analysis

The study will use statistical tools to analyze the data of the study. This will utilize the frequency d
percentage distribution to analyze the socio-economic profile of the respondents. Moreover, it will use
weighted mean to analyze the comparative study among different scholarship schemes in USM. To
determine the significant difference among scholarship schemes, this will employ independent t-test
and the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
