Planning an Essay
1. Read the question
2. Highlight keywords
a. Annotate/analyse what it’s
asking
3. Form a broad Thesis
4. Create 3 concepts
a. Break down into the 3
things you’ll need to prove
5. Re-write the thesis so it’s more
specific (A thesis is placed in the
last sentence of the introduction and the conclusion)
a. Ask the 6 thesis questions
i. Do I answer the question?
ii. Have I taken a position that others might oppose?
iii. It is specific enough?
iv. Does it pass the ‘so what’ test?
v. Does my essay support the thesis?
vi. Does it pass the ‘how and why’ test?
b. How to write a thesis
i. Answer the question
ii. Provide perspective
iii. Provide justification
6. Find evidence to prove the 3 concepts
