ACTIVITY: FLOOR SCREEDING

S/N DESCRIPTION
1 REQUIREMENTS
  i. Materials: Lake Sand, Cement, Water

  ii. Tools & Equipment: Wheel Barrows, Spades, Tape measure, Water Level/
Dumpy level, Jerry cans, Mortar pans, Steel float/ power float, Straight Edge,
Flat Compaction platform.

  iii. Man Power: Masons, Casual Laborers, Supervisor/ foreman

  iv. PPE: Helmet, Safety shoes/ Gumboots, Overalls/ reflector jackets, Dust masks,
Gloves

2 SPECIFICATIONS
  i. Mix Ratios:
 1:3, 1:4 (Cement: Sand)
  ii. Thickness of screed (usually 25mm; specified in contract documents)
iii. Finishing for the screed:
 Using a steel float for smooth finish
 Using a wooden float for a rougher hard finish.
3 PRECEEDING ACTIVITIES:
  Casting concrete for the floor slab should have been done and the concrete cured for at
least seven days.
 
Construction of the walls for the structure.

4 DESIRED OUTCOME
   It should be of specified thickness.
 Flat and level
 No cracks
 
5 PROCEDURE
i. Prepare the surface to receive the floor screed by cleaning and wetting it. This
should preferably be done the day before or hours before placing the screed.

ii. Find a benchmark and mark off levels at different points of the structure from
which you will base to ensure that the floor screed is level.
iii. Batch and mix the cement and sand as specified in the contract documents. The
mortar should be semi dry and homogenous (uniform color)
iv. Place the mortar onto the floor, starting from the farthest end.
v. Compact the screed onto the floor using a wooden platform shortly after
placement.
vi. Level the screed using a straight edge.
vii. For very long or wide floor areas, contraction joints should be used at intervals
not exceeding 6 meters to avoid cracking.
viii. Finishing on top of the screed should be done as specified in the documents.
About 5mm thick cement paste can be applied using a steel float to give it a
smooth finish, or the wooden float to give a rougher finish.
ix. Cure the floor by keeping it wet for at least seven days using dump dummy bags,
wet sand etc.
