JOB INSTRUCTION SHEET

ACTIVITY: BRICKWORK / BLOCKWORK

S/N DESCRIPTION
1 REQUIREMENTS

i. Materials: Burnt clay bricks/ concrete blocks, Sand, Cement, Water, Whoop
  Iron, DPM

ii. Tools & Equipment: Trowel, Wheel Barrows, Spades, Hoes, Plumb bob,
Builder's square, Tape measure, Water Level, Spirit Level, Jerry cans, Mortar
  pans, Building Line

  iii. Man Power: Masons, Casual Laborers, Supervisor/ foreman

iv. PPE: Helmet, Safety shoes/ Gumboots, Overalls/ reflector jackets, Dust masks,
  Gloves
2 SPECIFICATIONS
  Mix Ratios: 1:4, 1:6 (Cement: Sand)
Brick size (mm): 200 x 100 x 75, 215 x 115 x 75, 230 x 115 x 75
Block size (mm): 300 x 150x 225, 400 x 200 x 225
Quality (onsite tests): Should be strong and able to withstand fall from heights of up to
two meters, should have uniform colour throughout, should be able to resist scratching
from a sharp object, and should produce a clear bell ringing sound when struck with
  another brick/block.
3 PRECEEDING ACTIVITIES:
 
Concrete Casting for floor or Foundation: The brick wall should sit on a well finished
  and cured concrete slab.
4 DESIRED OUTCOME
   The walls to be vertically upright, perpendicular to the ground/ floor
   The mortar joints not to exceed specified thickness (usually 25mm)
   No cracking of the mortar joints.
   The top line of the brickwork to be on level.

5 PROCEDURE
 
i. Set out for the positions of the walls (as specified in the drawings) using a tape
  measure
iii. Mix Cement and sand to make mortar of specified grade with the specified mix
  ratio
 
iv. Place a layer of mortar on the floor slab in the position which is to have the
  brickwork/ block work.
 
vi. Place the first course of brickwork or block work in place. This should be in line
  with the drawings and specifications
viii. Ensure that the first coarse is properly aligned, straight, levelled, and on plumb
ix. Install DPM just before or after the first course of masonry work. This will
  prevent water ascension from the ground floor up through the wall.
 
 
x. Lay the remaining brick/ block courses using the same method and checks
  ensuring perfect alignment, levels and plumb.
 
xiii. Hoop iron is used after two or more courses to prevent cracks from spreading
  throughout the mortar joints of the wall.
 
xv. Check to ensure that the corners of the walls are perpendicular to each other at
 
their points of intersection. Also check to ensure that the walls are standing
  upright using a spirit level.
 
  xviii. It is advisable not to exceed one meter height of masonry work per day.
  xx. Cure the walls by keeping them wet/dump for at least seven days.
